We are a couple who have been traveling the US since 1982 when we went cross county with our 3 children ages 13, 10 and 4. 29 states and 47 campgrounds and we caught the travel bug. We then bought a campground in Southern Maine and enjoyed running it for 4 seasons.
Since then we continued to be self employed in the travel and building trades. We are now retired and spend our summers in Maine and winters on the road. We have visited the 50 states. Hawaii by air. :-)
We are somewhat Jack & Jill of many trades but masters of none. Always willing to share our experiences and knowledge and receptive to learn more from others.
We lost our beloved Labrador "Penny" last November. She loved to travel. She swam in every body of water we stopped at on our way to and from Alaska.
We love animals and welcome them.
We live in Naples, Maine. We arrived here in May 2016 after selling our Sticks and Bricks in June of 2015 and traveling to Alaska for the summer. We then spent the winter out west and upon coming back to Maine bought a small parcel of land on the Crooked River with an RV and full hookups. We fish, canoe, kayak, float in tubes and swim in the river. We enjoy sitting by the fire almost daily when weather permits. We are 3 miles from Sebago Lake State Park where you can swim, hike, bike or just enjoy the view of the lake with the mountains in the background. Sebago Lake is the second largest lake in Maine. We are less than 2 miles from the Songo Locks, a hand turned swing bridge that is intersting to watch as boats of many sizes travel through it to connect from Long Lake and Brandy Pond to Songo River and Sebago Lake. We are within 5 miles of Naples Causeway that offers a beautiful area to walk and many restaurants. The Songo River Queen is at the Causeway available for a boat tour of Long Lake. Delicious Maine seafood is available within a few miles to eat in or take out. Farmers markets are also near by.
We really liked our RV spot and enjoyed watching kayakers take advantage of the beautiful weather. Our lab was happy to take a few dips and then we all hung out by the fire. Super welcoming and happy folks! First Boondockerswelcome visit and it won’t be our last to this location!
These hosts are truly wonderful and welcoming folks with a beautiful place to camp. We'll definitely be back this way!
Thanks again 😊
Had a great stay, conversations around the fire every evening, shared most dinners together.
Very personal and fun hosts.
I will definitely try to make my way here again.
Crooked River Get-A-Way is a wonderful place to stay. Dick and Shirley are the best hosts - great conversation and lots of stories around the campfire. Kayaking along the river is a treat, Very Relaxing. We were their 1st Boondockers Welcome guests and it could not have been a better experience. Thank you so much.
I had a lovely stay with the hosts. We shared a campfire, and they took me to see the hand-operated locks on the canal. I was sorry that my broken hand didn’t permit me to go kayaking with them. They are eager to help their guests, and fixed a couple things on my rig that I could not do. I hope to stay again in the future, and maybe camp with them sometime.
Crooked River Getaway is a hidden gem along a beautiful river. The hosts are such genuine people and we truly enjoyed spending time sharing stories and food with them. I think our dog was ready to move in! Can't wait to return someday!!!
D & S were amazing hosts. We were greeted by their smiling faces and warm welcome. The spot is right next to a lazy river. If we had the available time we would have loved to stay longer with them.
Dick & Shirl we’re our first Boondockers welcome Hosts. They were Amazing! The location was exceptional!! Beautiful place! Right on the river. We really enjoyed the time we got to spend with them.
What a lovely place the hosts have created along a tiny bend in a peaceful river in Naples Maine. A rough but not super remote road to tiny space right on the river, with welcoming hosts willing to share their knowledge and toys! Great fire pit. Took a short kayak trip on the river, and grilled out on the riverside. To our dogs, this place was Disneyland! They really made us all feel welcome. A short walk or ride to the Songo Locks, which were hand turned lock and dam gates. Fun area. We felt very at home and hope to come back some time. I think they will become a very popular BD location, but not too busy I hope!!
