Alan & Betty married in 1972, having met at Calvin College, one of the colleges of our church, located in Grand Rapids, MI. In the years since college we lived in Minnesota, New Jersey and Long Island, NY with one child born in each state. Those children also attended Calvin, found Midwestern spouses and have produced 5 grandchildren (to-date)! Frequent trips from LI to either Michigan or Chicago to visit these families showed us that long-distance travel could be enjoyable while times apart can be managed. Thus, full time RVing is a feasible means of enjoying our retirement.
Alan has served in accounting management positions at the companies he worked for while Betty was office manager for a pediatric dentist. We both served in our local church, Alan as treasurer and a deacon and Betty as the primary organist.
We are looking forward to enjoying different parts of the US and Canada in greater depth than an ordinary tourist. Staying in one area for a week or preferably a month at a time will enable us to become more intimately familiar with a town or region. Ideally, we want to also identify volunteer activities/positions that will allow us to use some of our gifts in order to be a blessing wherever we stay.
Alan- can swing a hammer but is by no means an expert in manual activities. An accountant by training, he can help in financial matters. Adept at planning.
Betty- loves to knit or crochet. She does interesting things in the kitchen with the help of Pinterest but this is not her first love. Also, quite good at organizing and getting things done- a manager.
Betty was born and raised in West Sayville, Long Island, NY and we raised our family in next door Sayville for the last 35 years. Alan was born in Modesto in the Central Valley of California and lived there until he went off to college in Michigan.
We have a 2014 Itasca Ellipse. 42' 10" in length, 3 slide outs including a full wall slide on the driver's side. We tow a 2013 Honda CR-V and expect to add a tandem kayak to our repertoire.
We had a nice visit with Alan & Betty upon their arrival. Very friendly and gracious. We were sharing stories about issues following GPS--the good and bad. Would like to have visited longer but they needed to get things ready for their visit with their daughter. Perhaps they will be by this way again and will stop in.
