60 yr old semi-retired hardware store owner, traveling with my wife and her rescue dog. We enjoy camping in State Parks and hiking, kayaking, riding bikes, anything outdoors.
Today I spend most of my time talking about Tools, Hardware and farm supplies. I enjoy welding, fabricating, woodworking, electrical work, carpentry, and general maintenance. I’ve been camping and traveling around the US for 30 years.
Yes, our rescue dog is part Sharpei and part retriever. He is a good dog and doesn’t bark.
I am new to boondocking, but we camped with no amenities in Joshua Tree National Park in September of 2019.
We live in Fairbury, Illinois. A “one-stop-light” town of about 4000 that is a good mix of farming community and small business. Strong Christian faith and farm-to-table producers supplying fine restaurants with quality beef, pork, chicken, eggs, veggies, milk, and more. I grew up on the farm we live at, and where my business(Fairbury Fastener & Suppy), is located.
2015 Chevy Diesel 2500 (White) pulling a 2016 Puma 25TFS travel trailer. No slides.
Dwlfft was only here overnight, but they seemed like a nice couple, and they were very understanding about having to share their spot with a full timer on chemo who was self quarantining from the covid-19 virus. We were happy to be able to provide them a quiet spot to rest from the days travels😊
Parked in back of the store.
Grass mowed. Cornfields behind. Electric available 20 amp. Felt safe. Would stay again.
Great accommodating host. They're normal area was busy supporting harvesting So he had prepped another area for guest to stay. The area was great but he even offered to mow additional area if we thought it was needed. Great hardware store! The dogs loved all the attention.
First of all, I like tools, nuts, bolts, and wires. The Host runs my kind of store on his property.
Our Host really made us feel welcome and gave us a golf cart tour of his property. Later, I got to go shopping.
And, our Host is very supportive of his local community and local businesses. We did get the ice cream, milk, curds, and meat.
Mr D gave us a few choices for parking. Parking depends on harvest and nearby business activity.
We slept very well and really enjoyed our stay. Fairbury is real. It might be RFD, but people apply themselves and people seem to care.
We had a wonderful time. The host we great. Their store is out of this world. I've never seen such a large amount of tools and hardware. Even camper parts. Everyone should try to visit. We will if we are in the area again.
Truly a handyman’s paradise, as advertised. The store on the property has everything you need to fix any of those nagging RV repairs. Property is beautiful, plenty of room, no obstacles, and a beautiful small town nearby.
What a wonderful and warm set of hosts, they made us feel like we had been friends for years. The location and ability to choose where we wanted to park was great. Loved their store/shop, a real man’s candy store…..could’ve spent hours in there. We really look forward to them coming to visit us in Wisconsin. Great Stay!
This was our first time boon docking. We had a great stay with Dwifft, quite country setting. The guys really enjoyed the shop! Beautiful town with nostalgic homes. We love the country. We went up town and had some of the best ice cream at the Kilgus Farmstead County Store. Hope we can return the favor some day.

Another terrific BDW stop. Host very welcoming and provided a choice of parking spots. A quiet night next to the cornfield was greatly appreciated. The hardware store is impressive. Nearby farm was a gem for fresh milk, eggs, freshly ground coffee and wonderful homemade soap. Would definitely return if in area again. Thanks D&S!
Great stop. Gas near. Dave’s supermarket was very nice. Had great produce . Lots of local attractions. Host was friendly kind and considerate. 4G LTE both at&t and Verizon. Parking was by the corn fields and solar array.
My second stay here and had a great time swapping stories with this wonderful host, I now consider a friend.
I'll stay here anytime I'm in the area.
Enjoyed the stay immensely.Very hospitable.Rescued one of his dog's toys for a "Travel Rabbit".Truly a "Handyman's Candy Store".
Darrel put us back near cornfield and private also quite. Thanks so much we will be back gotta love the hardware store they have everything at great prices
A wonderful spot. Our host was friendly and very helpful. Our Boondocking spot was well situated to give everyone their space. The nearby town was friendly and packed with essential services as well as interesting shops.
We'll certainly ask to stay here whenever we're in the area.
There's a reason why this guy and his lovely home is a Super Host.
He and his family are so friendly and kind. He responded quickly to our request when we couldn't find anything else and it was looking like we'd be sleeping in a Cracker Barrel parking lot.The spot was under the shade of a lovely tree with pretty cow pastures and flowers all around.
We were even able to pick up some parts for our camper from his shop. Which by the way was amazing to wander through.
We would definitely stop here again on our travels.
Dwlfft is an excellent host. He met us and showed us where to park. After setting up, we spent some time (and money) in his store. Definitely a toy shop for those who are mechanically inclined. Dwlfft directed us to several local sites. If you stay, Dave's Market and Kilgus Farmstead are two of our favorites. WanderingBearAdventures would love to wander by here again.
For a quick overnight, it was perfect for me. Level gravel lot. Got there too late to visit the store, looks like a great place though!
Again nothing but great things to say about Dwlfft. We got a hold of him almost at the last minute to see if we could stay with him again and he was very accommodating for us. Great Stay.!
This is a great place to stop for the night. There is a factory right across the street form them but it didn't bother us one bit. When it gets time to go to bed it is pretty quiet. Dwlfft was a marvelous host and made us feel right at home. The business he has there is really a tool mans dream. My husband and I both looked around in there for quite a while. if you have time do be sure to stop in there and look around, you never know what you might find!!
Quiet and peaceful nights rest here. Always watched Mayberry as children and now we can say we visited a real life Mayberry RFD! Very awesome hardware store with all kinds of tools you wouldn't be able to get at just any hardware store. Would definitely use again. 👍
Mayberry RFD is a great stop if you're in the area. Easily accessible and less that 5 minutes from a cute little town that has everything you need. The "warehouse noise" some mentioned was not even noticeable to us. Would absolutely stay again.
Nice place to stay and our host was very accommodating! Would like to stay when we have time to visit the store! Thank you!
Super friendly & a really cool business if you like tools & gear of all kinds.
Easy going, spent time showing me options for my overnight parking and fun conversationalist.
I'll be back, if they'll have me.
We had a wonderful and peaceful evening at Mayberry RFD. We will definitely visit again when we are in the area.
If you need tools, he has them!
As our first stay at Boondockers Welcome host we are very encouraged. The circumstances were extremely unusual as road construction was going on and Auto racing in town on a week night. No bother to us and Dwlfft was apologetic though none was in his control. Offering us a nice open field behind his home/professional tool store, we easily leveled and watched photo worthy sun set and rise. As a Home Improvement contractor I marveled at his stores' inventory. A must see for anyone regularly disappointed at the big box stores.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Pam & Daryl! Not only was their location lovely - overlooking beautiful farm fields - but we really hit it off. After dinner, they showed us around their place, including their Fastener & Supply store. (FYI: It has everything in the way of hardware in case a Boondocker is in need.) We would love to come back for a visit in the future.
We had a nice evening here. Quiet in spite of the factory across the road and a beautiful starry night. We also enjoyed perusing through the store for needed bits n pieces.
Dwifft was in the driveway when we pulled up, showed us several options for parking, and after we were set up offered me a tour of his store. It was very impressive, and I could have spent hours browsing the tool section! His wife met us while we were setting up, and within minutes we were discussing shared experiences in the military. Great hosts, and the only downside to the stay was the noise from the highway and the steel warehouse across the highway that operated 24/7. Even with that, we slept well.
