We own a small farm where we raise Angus for beef and horses roam the pastures. Our farm house is 200 years old and was once used as an Equine Bed & Breakfast . In our free time we love to travel and see parts of this big country that we have never ventured into before. When we aren't traveling we are spending time with our family, which consists of nine children and five grand-babies whom most live nearby.
Besides the numerous farm animals we also have two cats and three dogs.
We live in a small town, about 60 miles west of Washington, D.C. and about 40 miles east of the Shenandoah Valley. Just up the road about 40 miles you'll find the Luray Caverns.

J, C, and H were wonderful guests. They came and went about at their own leisure. We were privileged to visit with them on the back porch one evening. They liked our area so we welcome them back any time. We were sorry that they had to cut their stay short by a day. Maybe they can make up for that next time.
We had an awesome time hosting this family. Great Porch chats! We look forward to seeing them again at either our home or theirs! They are welcome back anytime!
What a lovely place — kind hosts, friendly animals, rolling hills, beautiful trees, sunny days, quiet nights under the stars.
At Narrow Gate Farm, we were greeted right as we rolled in. Our host was incredibly kind and generous — saying we could pretty much park anywhere and offered up a spot at the top of a hill with beautiful views. There was even potable water there!
The animals (horses, dogs, cats) were so friendly. Our host was quick to respond if we had any questions. In fact, when we got stuck in some mud (we really need to upgrade our tires and have been talking about it for a year now) our host even came out in the evening and rescued us.
Even though we weren't able to spend any real-time together (being respectful of COVID restrictions) — we could tell that our hosts were amazing humans by how friendly they were.
We hope we get to stay at Narrow Gate again in the future!
I can’t say enough how welcoming and relaxed the hosts are. My stay was short but I had a wonderful chat with the owner on my arrival. It’ll be hard to top the beauty of this setting at another Boondockers Welcome site. I should also say my dog gives it two “thumbs” up. She loved spending time with the host’s very, very friendly dogs.
The Hosts were fantastic and very helpful and insightful for my trip to DC.
Beautiful property and easily accessible.
Thank you to my Hosts J and H for the wonderful conversations we had and I hope we get to stay in touch.
Beautiful property with plenty of flat easy parking even for a large vehicle. Our girls loved playing with the dogs and getting to ride the horses! Easy access to Shenandoah NP. Definitely our favorite boondocking location so far!
Super friendly host and beautiful property. We slept peacefully under the stars in a level spot in horse corral.
Took advantage of proximity to Shenandoah NP.
We love their adorable dog Finn and wanted to swap him with our own nuckleheaded dogs. Limited cell signal with Verizon. Would stay again! Thank you NarrowGate farm!!
The Virginia countryside is spectacular and this remote area is the perfect place to experience it. I awoke each morning to horses wickering in the paddock next to me. My hosts were warm, friendly and interesting. I'm not much of a socializer but spent an enjoyable afternoon talking about RVing and boating, both of which we had mutual knowledge and interest. The space is easy in/out and quiet. Probably too far for an overnight stop (but worth it if you get there early enough to enjoy it) but is ideal as a base to explore the Civil War sites. I highly recommend Narrow Gate and its owners. Will see them again on a North-South adventure.
It really was like coming home. We’re full-time on the road with our two kids and our puppy and it was an amazing stay for everyone. We felt welcome from the moment we got there. We got in later than we had hoped when driving in, but our host met us and helped us get situated right where we needed to be. They were so accommodating, so welcoming and went way out of their way for us. We woke up to stunning views of horses playing in the pasture and our girls loved playing on the hay bails and petting the animals and even got a chance to walk around the pen on horseback...a lifelong dream for them:) Our puppy got to play as well and had the time of her life running with their friendly pets. We needed a day to recuperate and we were more than able to here. This was one of our best experiences on the road so far. Thanks for everything. We can’t wait to come see y’all again. Thanks for making us feel so welcome and taking such great care of us.
It was a real pleasure to stay on this beautiful farm. Our host was kind and helpful and a joy to speak with. Our TT was perched on a small hilltop overlooking the pastures, hills, and fall foliage. Couldn't imagine a better spot!
Ideally located spot to relax and enjoy a farm setting away from the hustle and bustle of DC and near to Skyline Drive. Host is very gracious, friendly and accommodating. A couple of choices on the property of places to park your RV. The spot at the top of the hill suited us best. We are likely to return.
This was our first stay, and J was a kind and generous host. The farm is beautiful, complete with horses, and their adorable dog Finn.
We got ourselves stuck when leaving, and J and his son were gracious and pulled us out.
Thanks again J for hosting us!
Great location near Skyline Drive for a quiet getaway. We were greeted by host with his friendly great dane. We stayed in their horse corral with another camper and we never felt cramped. It was a beautiful setting next to their horse pasture. There are many good reasons why so many have stayed in such a short time. We hiked the area with our dogs and drove Skyline Drive and enjoyed the fall colors. I would highly recommend this location if quiet is what your seeking. Thank you to our hosts.
We stayed for 4 nights at this location and feel that we made a new friend in the host. He was so kind and welcoming. His daughter showed our kids the horses and we got up close and personal with the beautiful cows. We look forward to staying in touch and we most definitely would stay again!
A level spot, was met as we drove in, friendly horses. Nice view of the rolling hills. Couldn't ask for more. Going to put a star next to this host so can come back again.
Out in the country oh, really nice hosts. Would definitely recommend
This was a great stay for us even though it was only one night. The owner and his wife were so hospitable and welcoming to us and the others who stayed here as well. For those of you with big rigs, have no fear. We are 40 feet long and we tow a Honda CRV. The roads in and out are super easy and even the camping spots on the farm are easily accessed even for our size rig. What a beautiful setting too! We are definitely putting this place on our calendar to visit again. Thanks again to NarrowGateFarm for a great night's stay!
As always this was the perfect place to stop, relax, and get some shut-eye after a long day of exploring Shenandoah and the Luray Caverns. Thanks for saving us with fresh towels!
Thank you Jim! We had a wonderful 5 nights on your farm, venturing off to hike the wonderful Shenandoah National Park trials. We appreciated your hospitality, offering a choice of sites, availability of water, your delightful Great Dane Finn, and your stopping by for a nice conversation. I hope you do find time to travel and enjoy other BW hosts. Thanks for inviting us back, we hope to see you again in the future. Cheers!
We just spent 5 nights at Narrow Gate Farm. This place is amazing! We were one of between four and six rigs but were soooo far apart, it was like having the place to ourself. It was easy in and easy out with multiple spots to park in. There were cows 🐄 and horses 🐎 every direction we looked! We were close to everything we wanted to do including Luray Caverns, Shenandoah National Park and the Skyline Drive. The hosts are so kind and hospitable. They share their property with Boondockers and ask for nothing in return. Our time there was peaceful and relaxing and we'd love to go back someday! Love you guys for putting yourselves out there for Boondockers Welcome guests.
Thanks for such a great weekend! Your farm was a adventure in itself for our family. Loom forward to seeing you again.
Thank you for a wonderful stay. Narrow Gate Farm is a great host. He made sure we were settled in and assisted us when our truck battery died. Communication was great and the sites were all easy to get in and out of. We stayed atop the hill in the freshly plowed hay field. The view was amazing. The family Great Dane came by every morning to say hello and then I'm sure he made his rounds on the farm. This was our first stay on Boondockers Welcome and we would recommend it to everyone.
Awesome place to stay. We loved being surrounded by the cows and horses. Area is beautiful and quiet.
NarrowGateFarm is simply amazing and warmly inviting! The drive in was a little tricky so really pay attention to their directions when they message you back. We highly recommend unhooking your toad before turning into their road. Our hosts are very accommodating and awesomely friendly but gave us space and privacy to work and relax. They have two locations to park RVs; up on the hill or down between the horse corral and cow pasture. We parked on the grass between so our kitties could enjoy watching the ranch animals.
Our kitties loved chatting with their big friendly dog through our screen door (psssst, he loves dog cookies!) and watching the horses and cows (yes, they're fenced). The hosts and their quiet country setting that is enticing us to return. They offered us water to fill our tank. For our gratitude, we treated them to a chili supper. Got to share some stories and information like old friends would do.
One thing to be aware of. When we first arrived, we were the only BW guests. Our AT&T WiFi signal was great. However, once three other RV's pulled in, our signal tanked. We suspect though if we'd parked up on the hill, our WiFi signal may have been better.
Thank you so much J & C for this BW opportunity! We so appreciate you sharing your little piece of Virginia paradise with us!
NarrowGateFarm was so helpful to us and we really enjoyed getting to know them a little. The spot we were in was extremely spacious and we had no trouble getting in with a large rig. The entire area is beautiful and peaceful. Would absolutely recommend.
NarrowgateFarm extended to us a firepit peach cobbler with ice cream and two other voyagers. Our site was between the horse paddock and cow Pasteur. Totally awesome. totally peaceful. You must make this a stop.
We really enjoyed this huge property! Communication was easy and very professional. Greeted with a smile and free water...what else could you ask for!? Highly recommended. Thank you so much
This was our first real test of our generator and solar panels and it couldn’t of happened at a prettier place! We so enjoyed the area and our hosts were first class. Thank you so much for sharing your property and our campfire. We’re looking forward to a return visit sometime.
What a a great place. So quiet, stars galore, relaxing view and awesome hosts. Had bonfire with the host family and other boondockers that were present. This place definitely deserves high ratings and recommendations. Also hiked part of the Appalachian Trail that was within driving distance. Again if you can go there you won't be disappointed. 👍👍👍👍👍😁
Very friendly and helpful. Beautiful farm in country setting. Was able to get us into an RV repair shop on short notice.
This location is very quiet and dark at night. Easy to get to for any rig, you'll enjoy a beautiful view, great stars, good talks, and fun dogs!
Very peaceful historic farm with a friendly host and his big dog. The dog was so big that you had to raise your arm just to pet his head. Our host provided a nice boondocking site with privacy. I always look forward to the time with our host when we trade stories of the places we have seen. Once again, I was not disappointed. We left in the morning with another memory and another new friend.
What a beautiful farm! Pictures are inadequate to represent its perfect bucolic nature.
Jim greeted us and came back later to chat for a while. He is an impressive dude. Diversified, busy, highly productive family man.
Offered a couple different sites on the farm, we stayed on a hill overlooking recently mowed fields, well kept fence lines and horses. Memorable views.
The smaller roads in the area make for very scenic bike rides. They are all hilly and full of turns.
Both Verizon and AT&T signals were strong.
Narrow Gate Farm is off the beaten path, to be sure, but as restful and naturally beautiful as you could hope to find.
Really enjoyed watching our pups play together. They’ve got a beautiful very sweet very large great Dane. My pup is recovering from all of the exercise he got. Bonus my pup got to meet the ponies and the cows.
Awesome, we were broke when we arrived and they saw that we were taken care of. Moved their big rig so we could hook up to 50 amp service and water. Helped me troubleshoot the problem and we were down the road in two days. Will definitely stay there again if we are in the area. We made some new friends here. Highly recommended.
Our second stay at Narrow Gate Farm was every bit as enjoyable as our first! Wonderful hosts, great accommodations, what more can you ask for!
The hosts were very accommodating, helping us find the perfect spot for our huge rig. We overlooked the farm from a hilltop and it was beautiful. The horses and the huge dog, Finn, made an awesome welcoming committee.
This was our first Boondocking experience in our brand new Winnebago Solis just me and my girls. We headed down from Delaware for the weekend. I was super nervous giving it go on my own with the kids but this ended up being the perfect location. The owner and his daughter were super welcoming and knowledgeable which allowed me to relax knowing they were a resource if we needed anything! Staying in the arena was a lot of fun. Beautiful farm scenery all around with both cows and horses to watch right from our site. We were able to explore “hike” the farm and the surrounding wooded area. Perfect for young kids with tired legs! Jim let us know about a water pump with fresh water if we needed it up by a shed - this came in handy when I became stuck in the mud on our hike! The kids favorite part was when the daughter came and showed us the horses and let the kids ride one around the arena! They didn’t want to get off! This was a great weekend and we plan to return in a few weeks to check out the fall foliage! Be sure to say Hi to Fin the Great Dane!
Great location for easy access to caverns and the Shenandoah National Park - we did go for a drive but the fog was so dense we could not enjoy the overlooks! Next time!
Our stay at Narrow Gate Farm was excellent. Our host had a large family with a lot going on but he made sure to provide us with all the answers to our questions about the area ....and also just hung out and visited a few times which we always appreciate. We loved how quiet and peaceful It was on the entire property. This part of VA is a beautiful area to explore. So much history is close at hand and we even got a nice afternoon of canoeing in on the Rappahannock River. If exploring is not your cup of tea, Narrow Gate Farm is also just a great place to relax. We would stop here again if in the area, or maybe, with any luck, we’ll run into our host when they are out-n-about in their beautiful remodeled tour bus. Thanks so much for all your hospitality and good conversation.
We had a wonderful and relaxing week on their property the scenery was very beautiful. The family was very hospitable and the host was great. He was very accommodating and fun to be around. They even had a great Dane on the property that was very friendly and loves to visit us each day. The family has voted and we all agree that was our favorite place to Boondock. If we are ever in the Virginia area again we would definitely consider stopping in again. We also would recommend this to any of our friends and family great place great people.
Jim and his family and pets are so friendly. We felt like me met old friends.
A quiet and friendly atmosphere. What else could you want.
We highly recommend.
Great time with this family. They boondocked with us a while ago. In conversation, it was mentioned that he is a partner in a RV repair business. Well our gen hasn't worked since December. So we took our RV over to his shop. His farm is awesome and we got to go to local tourist spots and again great. We are heading back over in a couple of weeks to have the gen replaced. I would advise any boondocker is if you get a chance, go here!!!! 10 out of 10!
Owners are very friendly, helpful and have a beautiful Farm! We are Extremely happy with our stay here and highly recommend it!
Could not have had a more congenial and welcoming host...generous, knowledgeable, friendly! Farm so beautiful and peaceful...relaxing...great to see friendly horses...plenty of space. Wonderful experience! Would eagerly return...thank you Jim for a great time and all your kindness!
This site has a beautiful view of a valley. It's very rural. Beautiful stars nice level firm campsite. Super friendly owners. Had a great time highly recommend
This was our first boondocking trip. We did not know what to expect but NarrowGateFarm set a very high bar. The hosts were very welcoming, helpful, and accommodating. We were met first by the beautiful Finn, the Great Dane puppy and the horses and cows made wonderful views out our windows. There was plenty of room for parking and fresh water was available on this very peaceful farm., I feel we have made new forever friends.
Although this was my first Boondocking experience, I felt very comfortable and safe The host and his family were very friendly and accommodating. We were able to run or generator, as it was very hot. My fresh water tank was low but there was a water available to refill it.
I was met on arrival with a warm welcome, and showed the choices of where I could park. I preferred the shed where the roof provided some respite from the sun, 95’...so hot!
The dogs Were fun to play with and watch play, each with it’s own personality, I enjoyed all 3 of them, as well as the the horses and cows.
The area was very quiet and peaceful.
Both hosts were easy and interesting to talk with.
I chose to leave the day after arrival due to the heat and needing to run my air conditioner which required me to run my generator. The hosts were totally understanding and left me with an invitation to come back any time.
I look forward to seeing them again and spending time, perhaps next time in the horse ring where star watching is amazing.
Narrow Gate Farm is beautiful, and located in one of our favorite areas of the US. The hosts made us feel welcome, and could not have been more accommodating. This was our first time using Boondockers Welcome, and what a treat! We look forward to returning here in the fall!!
J & C have a gorgeous farm and a perfect spot to rest the camper! We thoroughly enjoyed having the horses nearby and getting daily visits from Fin the great dane. Their family is very friendly and love to chat, would totally enjoy revisiting any time!
We are so thankful to have had such an amazing first experience boondocking at your farm. We couldn’t have asked for more gracious and helpful hosts, besides the fact that your property with all its animals is absolutely Gorgeous. It was such a nice reprieve for us to get away from our busy metropolitan lives and leave everything behind for a couple of days. We can’t thank you enough and hope to be able to visit you again one day!
The host property was close enough to town for convenience, but far enough away to experience and enjoy a quiet farm setting. The hosts were wonderful and even provided fresh water to fill our tank. Great place - we would definitely stay again!!
