We have been married 40 years this year and have never had a dull moment! After showing horses for nearly 30 years we use our little camp to entertain our friends. Our former horse barn is our community building. Camp Ames has its own shelter building complete with full bathroom and fridge. The area is full of Indiana wildlife including deer and bald eagles. The river lays across the small country road from camp where you can fish or kayak. Bicycling is very popular in this area. While traveling in our own Class A Bounder we have enjoyed trips to Yellowstone, Texas, Michigan and multiple trips to Florida where Wayde enjoys deep sea fishing and Beth loves to walk the beaches of Venice looking for sharks teeth.
We possess the gift to gab.
Our travel buddy is our 13 year old black Snoodle, Spooky. Guarding the farm is border collie Stringbean or sometimes we still refer to him as Puppy. He keeps close to the house but has a frisbee close just in case a victim might drive up and want to play. When he can't find a human to follow around he relies on our cat Jethrine to keep him occupied. They have a very close relationship. We do ask that if Stringbean visits the campground to nicely chase him back to the house so he does not get close to the road. He is after all just looking for a play mate and sometimes forgets where the invisible line is.
Peru, Indiana is 3.5 miles from camp. The third week of July the local community celebrates when the Circus called Peru home. It is rich in Circus history. Wayde and his father occupy the Circus Farm located about a mile and half across the river. Cole Porter, the famous composer was born in Peru and they have activities remembering him. In the winter months the family mansion can been seen across the river and thru a field from the camp area. Up river about 5 miles is the man made Mississinewa Reservoir. It holds 3200 acres of water and is 9 miles long. It is a beautiful area maintained by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

What a great boondockers welcome spot! This place is nicer than most campgrounds. Met the host and shot the breeze for an hour or so. I really wish the weather was better and we had more time. Can't recommend this place enough. Thank you!
Nice clean level easy to access site. Very gracious and generous hosts.
Very accommodating, and good conversation.
A nice level graveled lot, easy to get into, plenty of room with easy hook ups. Soda Pop machine and Ice on site!
Pleasant experience, Was very accommodating even when our schedule was interrupted during the journey in changing our arrival time.
The hosts are awesome and the property is beautiful. We came for one night, and found a ton of things to do, so the host graciously let stay for a second. Be sure to visit the Miami County Museum in downtown Peru and the Circus Hall of Fame. When planning, call and schedule an appointment for the Hall of Fame. Their off season is by appointment only. There are trails nearby and downtown has a Riverwalk. We can’t wait to stay here again!
We spent two wonderful nights at Camp Ames. The hosts are wonderful! They met us when we arrived and directed us on how to best pull in. The location is absolutely fantastic. The river runs across the road and the hills form a nice backdrop to the camp sites.
We were the only guests and it was absolutely peaceful and quiet. The (full) bathroom helped us keep the gray and black tank usage very low.
The (gravel) area is very level and we had no trouble leveling whatsoever.
Make sure to bring a filter since the water has some rust to it that tends to leave some stains. It does not seem to affect the taste, though - although we filtered both at the spigot and again with a Brita Pitcher.
Gracious and friendly hosts in a peaceful setting! We would love to visit again
Such a great place, Large site, all the hookups we needed. Host and hostess the perfect couple, both greeted us as we arrived. They explained everything that was available for us to use. Enjoyed walking in their meadow and all the beautiful wildflowers. Maybe we will be able to play cards when all of us get to the sunny south this winter. Look forward to seeing them again.
Was staying second time in this place, and we had good time again. Delicious 😋 yellow tomatoes from they garden 🪴for our barbecue 🍗 on the wooden fire 🔥.
Very beautiful quiet place, kayaking, grilling on fire ring and very welcoming owners.
Love it so much, we’re staying through the weekend! These hosts have the gift of hospitality! Allowing us to stay longer and helping us to get our Power fixed. I can’t thank y’all enough!
Beautiful farm right on there river. Level gravel lot with full hook ups in an amazing setting.
We were greeted as we arrived and Wayde was more than hospitable.
We arrived and we’re welcomed by the host! After we got set up he came by and offered us some fresh vegetables we had a great conversation, very friendly! We loved it, great stay!
This was such a nice stop. Beautiful area to park, walk, or just sit and enjoy the river. They met us at the parking with a beer and some
nice conversation. Hookups and amenities were perfect.
This is a great little campsite. It had everything we need. Electric and water hookups. A little river to fish at and close enough to walk to. In fact it was right across the road. I definitely recommend this place. In fact I may come back to stay a week or more.
Camp Ames has it all!
50amp, 30 amp, water and waste connections available at 5 sites.
What more can you wish for?
How about a vending machine, ice bags, fridge/freezer combo, sink, toilet and shower!
This beautiful spot is nearby a river.
We were welcomed by Wayde on the first evening, drank some beers on the patio and met his lovely wife the next day.
The host borrowed us his canoe's and brought us to the dam were the river started. We had a relaxed 2.5 hour decent on the river. We spotted 5 bald eagles, some woodpeckers and turtles. We passed the 7 pillars were the Indians traded.
We came as strangers, but left as friends. We would certainly recommend this place and are looking forward to return to this hidden gem in Peru.
Thanks Wayde & Beth, you guys rule!
Welcoming hosts that provide a beautiful and spacious place to stay. We were able to park our 40-foot 5th wheel without unhooking from our truck. Enjoyed visiting with the hosts and learning about the history of the area. Peaceful, country atmosphere with a river across the way to sit by; a wildflower meadow to walk through. The extra amenities added, made for a pleasurable stay.
Beautiful spot with full hookups included. Pop machine, Ice for sale, they have a BBQ grill that you can use, full bathroom facility and picnic area. Near this location, there's a field of flowers. We weren't able to see all of them in bloom, but hope to one day come back this way to see them in all their beauty. Very close to the water front and we were even able to wave to passerby's in their canoes/boats etc. Was able to visit with one of the owners and he was very kind. One corner on the way in was a bit tricky in our 33 footer with tow dolly and car, because we're left side heavy, but doable at a slow pace. Great place for pictures to boot. We enjoyed our stay.
Traveling to Wisconsin and found the Ames camp. They are such great host and their property is beautiful! Highly recommend.
We REALLY enjoyed our stay at Camp Ames and appreciate the perfect hospitality during our 2 day visit. We were greeted at time of arrival and offered assistance to help with setup or with any other possible needs. We were received valuable local and historical info about Peru, Indiana which made sightseeing great! Thank you Camp Ames and we certainly hope to return someday.
Great stay & enjoyed the peaceful river & fall colors. Took a short hike Great star gazing. Host very friendly & we were able to remained hitched up. Highly recommend!
Wonderful couple! The location was beautiful and very peaceful.
We left with popcorn from their popcorn field and seeds for flowers for next year!
We would definitely visit them again when in the area.
What a great place to stay! The owners treat you like family. They even gave us corn to take with us.
I don’t think I can add to all the positive comments already shared. Our son pitched his tent under the shade of the big tree and we camping in spot #1 and enjoyed using the fire pit both nights. The entire area was spotlessly clean and maintained. Wade and Beth were outgoing and attentive. We spent two nights and enjoyed fishing in the river right across from the property, walking to the nature preserve and doing the 1.2 mile hike there, cycling part of the Nickel Plate rail-trail, visiting the International Circus Hall of Fame grounds (even though the museum was closed, there are outside markers around the grounds that provide plenty of information for a self-guided tour), and sampling the hard ciders and wine slushes at McClure’s Orchard Winery. Plenty to stay busy for a few days in the area. If the river had been higher, kayaking would have been an option but as it was, it was still fun to wade up and down a bit. We will definitely revisit anytime we’re back in the area.
What a great place to stay: campfire ring, full hook ups, bathroom, fishing in the river, bike trails. We even stayed an extra day we so enjoyed the location and hanging out with our hosts. Definitely worth a visit.
We had a lovely stay at Campames! Our host and hostess were genuine and have a beautiful spot for boondocking! They shared local areas of interests and even supplied a fire pit with wood! Beautiful wild flowers, birds and sounds of crickets! Hope to return in the fall!
Everything about this boondockers welcome location is great, the location, the amenities, the host. Couldn’t create a better experience in a movie. Plan on being disconnected from cellular and enjoy the Mississinewa River right next door, beautiful wildflowers, on-site shower house and fire ring. We will definitely plan on visiting again! Thanks camp Ames for your gracious hospitality.
It couldn't have been a better stay! They even insisted we take some sweet corn with us. We will be visiting again for sure!
This by far was the most comfortable and pleasant place we have ever stayed. Thank you for the amazing place to stay. Very pleasant and hospitable hosts. Peaceful and clean.
These hosts were absolutely top notch. Very generous, great conversation, and they have an incredible piece of property. The recreation building was in immaculate shape as were the shower and bathroom. The river is just a short walk away and the meadow of wildflowers was beautiful. I really look forward to stopping here again in the future.
Enjoyed their beautiful land and the great conversations.
Everything you need is there’! Very helpful hostess! Very quiet and beautiful.
This host should be the poster child of Boondockers Welcome. They have created a breathtaking homestead on their acreage that borders the Mississinewa River. Easy parking with full hookup! With the 4 acre flowered meadow, the meandering river and the rolling hills surrounding their home, it couldn’t be more beautiful. But wait....you get all of that and them. They are a fun loving, easy going couple that have experienced a lot of what life has to offer. Interesting conversations around the campfire came easy. We look forward to meeting up with them again.
Host and site were awesome. The grounds were so welcoming the hosts were very welcoming and made sure we had what we needed. Would highly recommend a visit and we will surely return. They have moved to the top of our boondockers experience.
Wade and Beth were great host. The camp was peaceful and the scenery was beautiful! The fish were biting all weekend which added to the fun. We will definitely visit again!!
Our stay at Camp Ames was amazing. The hosts are a friendly, welcoming couple that provided great conversation around a fire in the evening. They went above and beyond.
The spot has a bathroom and indoor hangout area. It would be great to stay a few nights but we could only stay one unfortunately.
Hopefully we will make another trip to Indiana and stay here!
Thanks again :)
The hosts were there to receive me and give directions when I arrived. Lots of room to maneuver around. Camp is across the road from the river. Enjoyed the peace and quiet. Host checked in with me to make sure everything was acceptable. They offered another night but at this time I could not accept. Look forward to seeing them in the future.
