Hi, we are a couple in our early 50's from New Zealand. We have two kids, Ashley (23) and Scott (20). We are pretty much retired and love to travel when we can, (Mike is an ex cop and Catherine is a Homeopath working from home).
We have travelled extensively around the USA and Canada in various Rv's ranging from an old Chevy van in 1997 (18,000mile trip) to our current 2007 29.5' Four Winds RV that lives with friends in Colfax, California (near San Francisco). We have racked up 45 states and driven over 45,000 miles so far! We used to take the kids out of school for a few months travelling at a time.
Our recent trips have been for the purpose of skiing and are happy in our rig at well below freezing temps, (-21c/-6f is our record so far!).
We live in pretty much the most picturesque part of New Zealand, Arrowtown. Check out www.arrowtown.com or www.queenstown.com to get an overview. We have 27 acres of farmland so can accommodate any size rig and have household power and water available at the house. If you are travelling to NZ, you have to come to this part, you wont be disappointed.
Ashley is a horsey girl, loves travelling, Scott is a downhill mountain bike freak and just about a pro on ski's. Catherine is just learning to ride horses and Mike just loves racing his '96 Mustang Cobra.
Catherine is of course great with the homeopathic remedies and Mike can turn his hand to most things.
We pretty much boondock anywhere, have used plenty of Walmarts etc but are just as happy parking quietly in a suburban street and going to sleep. We tend to camp in campsites or RV parks if they are around as we like the power for heaters in winter but we love finding quiet spots by rivers etc away from it all. When stuck we often park in a hotel carpark or rock up to the local police station and ask if we can park in their carpark. If they don't want us to do that, they will almost always advise us where we can park safely for free, but they usually are fine and invite us in for dinner etc.
Our local council has recently allowed free camping in a few spots, by rivers and lakes, some with toilets but no hook-ups. Lots of other free camping around the general area too.
2007 29.5ft Four Winds 28a class C, (not an ex-rental!) No slideouts, fully self contained. Bought it off Ebay in a dollar auction, sight unseen! Couldn't be happier with it. Only had 7000miles on it when we bought it. A few more now. Look out for the Kiwi flag and stickers from all the skifields we have been to.
