We are both retired. Becky was a music teacher and I am a respiratory therapist, past paramedic and EMT instructor. Currently involved with our county Emergency Management Agency. We are slowly, how else do retired folks do things?, getting into the RV'ing. But I personally want a skoolie to travel in. We are both active in our church. I have travelled to many third world countries, mostly medical mission trips, and have learned that the United Methodist motto - open minds, open hearts, open doors - is a good view.
As a ham radio operator I know some electrical and electronics. Becky is good with sewing and canning/cooking. As my hobbies cover many areas there are probably snippets of pearls hidden away
We have 2 basset hounds Max and Matilda (Mattie). They are brother and sister. Max is a big lover, Mattie is the pixie. Both like meeting people (especially children who will give them belly rubs) and other dogs. Limited exposure to cats so that would be interesting as we have no real idea how they would react. So far Max ha tried to play with them. They have tried to make friends with other animals. Except bunnies that Mattie wants to hunt. They both travel well.
We live just outside of the BIG town of Moro, IL. It has one church and a post office. Located in the metro area of St. Louis, MO.
We have recently changed from our 33' class A to a smaller 22 foot (OK, they actually say 21'11") travel trailer. Unfortunately, we still have the class A until we can sell or trade it. We are now pulling it with a 2007 Chevy Silverado. Much better than my old Toyota Prius ;-) Actually, there is a bit of a long story for all of this - we can bore our guests/hosts with it LOL.
While installing a couple of vent covers on our RV N9DWQ, the host, mentioned that he also had some to install. Knowing that he'd had a stroke a few years ago I offered to take a look at his needs if I finished in time to join my family in St. Louis for dinner. I completed both of our vents and his two that morning. Then he offered a home cooked meal to us. I had to decline as we already had meals planned with my Mom or Daughter for the whole time we were scheduled to be there. The next day his wife delivered a home baked apple pie made from apples grown on their property. It was the best apple pie that we've had in ages.
Very interesting stop. Lots of history and knowledge shared. Driveway is a little snug, but doable. The tour of the Dome was very interesting. Nice quiet place.
n9wdq was a great host for our short visit. Loved talking about ham radios and camping experience sharing. Loved the cool dome house that saves half the utilities versus other standard homes. Easy parking and electric hook up for the night. The hound dogs were very friendly and cute. Host is very knowledgeable about many technology subjects.
Quiet, peaceful, lovely place.
We enjoyed our stay. The hosts are fantastic and very helpful. We toured a little bit of St Louis and some of the area, the hosts gave us lots of ideas.
Thanks for the stay!
This location is outside of St. Louis- an easy drive into the city, and the host gave me a map and suggestions of things to do and see. He set out arrows so I could easily find his driveway, helped me into the level spot with hookups (declined my offer of a donation for E/W) and showed me around the property. Beautiful 5 acres is really peaceful in the country, but not far from shops/restaurants. Loved chatting with host and hope to pass through and stay with them again some day.
It was a hot 5 days ...
... But that was the worst of it. If you're passing through St. Louis you need to stop here.
Thank you so much for a safe place to park while we toured around your beautiful area.
Had a great visit. Folks were very friendly.
Outstanding host and great communication. Unfortunately we were on a tight schedule and didn’t have time to stick around. Thank you for your hospitality.
We are so grateful for such a wonderful first boondocking experience! We had some trouble getting in, but D. was an amazing help not only with getting us parked correctly - but also with navigating some other mechanical issues we faced. As new RV'ers, it was extremely helpful to have someone so willing to help.
We have 4 dog-loving daughters who fell in love with the resident basset hounds - and we loved that the girls were so welcomed to play with the pups.
The location was about 40 mins from St. Louis (which was why we chose this location to boondock) but D. & B. were so amazing telling us about other really cool things that we should see - like the sign indicating we're 1/4 around the world from Greenwich, the statue of the tallest man, AND we stumbled across an adorable sweets shop. We had just as much fun exploring Illinois as we did in St. Louis (which was also amazing - we did the Anheuser Busch tour and visited the Gateway Arch).
There is a lot more we'd like to see in the area - too much to squeeze into 2 nights - and we would love to stay at the Dome again the next time we pass through!
Positive experience with friendly hosts that included a tour of a unique cement dome house. We found a lot of common ground to discuss, from aviation and HAM radio, to farm skills. Getting in and out with a 13’ tall rig was tough, but we made it and really enjoyed the restful stay. We hope to host them in return next time they are in Texas. Such nice people, they wouldn’t even let me pay for 50amp.
Our hosts were exceptionally generous and hospitable, and we loved getting a comprehensive tour of their fascinating house. We hope we can visit again and spend some more time getting to know them.
Interesting Tour of local sites
I enjoyed the whole experience
Thank you for being a great Host
Made sure we felt at home and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable… And we so appreciate that. We loved meeting you and your two dogs. You have a unique home and wonderful fur babies!
Our hosts were lovely and gracious! Very unique dome house. It was nice to be in a safe yard with my kids while my hubby traveled to Vancouver for work. Loved it! Thank you :)
Dennis and Becky were awesome hosts. Met me and guided me in. Hooked me up to elec & h20 & wifi and filled me in on things to see. I relaxed and got lots done in my camper. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
Wonderful host. Friendly and helpful people. Close to so many things to see. I made memories that I will cherish. They have great knowledge to share of the area. When you are in the area you should go by and see the tallest man that ever lived. Wonderful place to stay and visit. I really enjoyed their friendship and time spent together. Hope to see them again.
We had a wonderful time with the Dome! Cute Bassetts! Becky, The dinner was delicious! I loved the domed house, thanks for the grand tour and the great conversations! Thank you for letting us hang out with you!
Awesome location and hosts! My hosts were very welcoming and helpful with local hot spots and best ways to get around. We shared stories and went out to one of the local watering holes. Plenty of land and a fenced in back yard where our dogs could play together. Wonderful time and I hope our paths cross again.
When we arrived there was 5 inches of ice & snow on the driveway which is long & narrow. That made it interesting getting in and out. Becky met with us when we got in and assisted us in getting turned around so we could leave the next morning. She was a great help. The Dome is in very nice setting and we would love to return in the summer months.
We were delighted to meet Dennis and Becky and they welcomed us into their property with open arms. They helped us troubleshoot some power issues, invited us in for dinner and we shared stories and experiences with one another. We had a lot in common and look forward to crossing paths at the Dome again soon!
