Very nice stopover. Friendly host, good hiking, great paddling lake, good food and a nice river
Nice peaceful and quiet stay very nice host
I just loved touring the area so much to do.
Our host was great with info and welcoming us. This is a great spot down at the lake with camping spots, playground, marina and boat launch. They offer 50 amp which was good but we had some storms that knocked the power out for a few hours. Since the security gate is electric, we were trapped in the rec area for a few hours. Not a big deal as we weren't going anywhere but it could have been.
We would definitely return if we ever return to Alaska!,
Our hosts were so welcoming and kind to share their little slice of heaven with us. The view was amazing and a bonus to get electric at $5 per day as the summer temps kept rising. Thank you A & K for sharing
It was fun meeting you and we hope to meet again some day.
We really enjoyed our time at Big Lake. Our hosts were gracious and wonderful! Highly recommend!
Beautiful lakefront community recreation area. Friendly, knowledgeable host. Stayed on our way to Denali.
Great couple and prestine scenery. We very much appreciate their kindness and hospitality. We hope to see them our way soon. Best, Mount Family.
So friendly! We stayed for 2 nights and had access to 15 amp electric! Great location, right near Dolores, Cortez, and Mesa Verde National Park. Allan and Kathy were super friendly and accommodating, we even spent one night talking about our travels and they gave us a lot of helpful tips/recommendations for the surrounding areas. Hope to visit them in Alaska in the future!
We were VERY new into traveling at the time of our scheduled visit, and got lost on our way to their place. They were super patient and helpful, directing us back onto main roads, they even got in the car to look for us. We ended up just parking for the night and missed our stay at their place, but I feel it would have been a great time just by their demeanor over the phone. I do recommend this couple, even though we never quite made it to their driveway! I could tell they were welcoming and hospitable from our short conversations!
Beautiful hilltop, great mountain views and Wonderful Hosts! Great level spot, let me add water to my tank first then pulled to great spot with 15amp elec. Veey interesting hosts, live part-year in Alaska and part here on their 66 acres of heaven.
If you are lucky to catch them home, you will enjoy your stay. Not far frim 2 small towns so can get supplies. Near the Cantons of the Ancients Natl Park Heritage Center, hour drive from the Fabulous Hovenweep ruins and maybe 20 min from Mersa Verde NP! Fully reccomend meeting this fantastic friendly folks! Feel blessed to meet & visit with them.
"AlaskaPilot" were very welcoming and friendly, we had an excellent stay at their place. This is an excellent location to visit Mesa Verde NP and the surrounding. We look forward to visit them in Alaska, if our little boy allow it in a near future ;-). We strongly recommend these host. Thanks for everything!
We keep saying "it can't get any better " each time we leave a new boondocks site. But it does, Alaska pilot place is beautiful, great spot with terrific views, peaceful and quiet. Close to a lot of historical native American Indian sites. Host was very accommodating and has inspired us to go to Alaska and stop in to see him there. Will definitely make this spot a favorite on our list of many.
We had the best time here, thank you so much for landing us the kayaks to paddle around in. It was a beautiful day with view of Denali and had a great time at the Islander. Looking forward to your visit to New Zealand one day so we can return the favour.
We were looking for a place to finish up some work before heading back to the lower 48 but our favorite location was flooded.
We felt super fortunate to have happened upon this listing. There were two other campers the first night of our stay and then we had the place to ourselves for four nights.
The pavilion came in really handy for grilling as Alaska seemed it fit to see us off with 5 straight days of rain and the shore power was very much needed as solar wasn’t going to get the job done 😅. The listing mentions 30a service but we were pleasantly surprised to find both 30 and 50 amp!
The host is super accommodating and checked us in and out. He even texted a couple times to make sure we didn’t need anything and offered to let us borrow his kayaks! Very communicative but not intrusive in the least.
This was our first stay with a BW host and it couldn’t have been better.
We will definitely be back next summer!
Enjoyed a quiet evening at the communities gated lakefront lot. There was a nice pavilion and Boatdock and barbecue grills where we were able to cook our dinner. There was even electricity for a five dollar fee per night. It was such a treat to have electricity after almost a month with no electric. The hosts are great people although we did not get a chance to visit much with them as we left the next day to head to Denali. Both are Verizon and AT&T worked there. Both our Verizon and AT&T worked there.
We met Allan shortly after arriving in Big Lake, Alaska He guided us to their home and then to the RV site. Wow a 30 amp. Service included, they ask for $5 donation for electric and the site is free, couldn’t ask for more. Our host’s we’re leaving to go fishing for a few days, but Allan said they would be back on Thursday. Hope to see them tomorrow and get suggestions for day trips around Denali NP. We changed our time to stay with them and they were nice to accommodate us.
Allan is a delightful host, charming and personable, and did everything he could to make our stay enjoyable.
The site has picnic tables, power (for an inexpensive $5), a Porta potty, and fire ring (wood included!).
If you have boating equipment, you can use the launch and take a cruise around the lake.
Finding the spot is a little tricky, so it's important to stay in touch with the host.
