I guess I'm what you would call "your average Joe". Grew up on a small farm in Southern Indiana, and then moved to east-central Illinois about 36 years ago when I went to work at a local refinery. I love the out doors and spend much of my free time (and there is never enough) piddling around our 32 acre "farm", doing some motorcycle or ATV riding, or maybe in the woods hunting. My wife is a nurse, and my best friend. We enjoy traveling all over the country when we have the time.
I’m an auto/diesel mechanic by trade, but haven’t made a living in that profession for many years. I’m still pretty handy with a wrench, and a decent electrician and plumber when duty calls.
Just a few barn cats, and Leo & Luna the big white friendly dogs.
Up to this point, the only boondocking we've done has been at a few Wal-marts, truck stops, and rest areas.
Flat Rock, Illinois Great big town of about 350 good folks. If you're looking for action and lots of excitement, this ain't the place. If you're looking for a place that's pretty quiet, peaceful, and laid-back, then come and give us a visit!
24' Class C motor home and pulling a Jeep Wrangler behind.
Thanks for staying, hope to see you again sometime. Great guests.
We get the best of the community at boondockers welcome and these folks are no different.
Great guests. Nice and quiet, so quiet we never even heard them leaving in the early morning! We enjoyed getting to have a few conversations and would gladly welcome them back anytime in the future!
Mark kindly did not use our site when he realized he could not back their LARGE truck and LARGE 5th wheel into our site without driving on our neighbor's yard. I feel so bad about it as it was close to 8:30 and I have to wonder where they spent the night. We just had a 60' combination of a 40 ft. Class A RV and large trailer, with vehicle in it, spend several days. I am going to add to my "details" that certain large vehicles may have a problem.
We stayed with markew56 on our way to Texas for a visit with grandkids. It was a quick in and out, but his place is remarkably quiet. I loved his gorgeous white Pyrenees dogs and all the little kittens that greeted us. He had a perfect spot for us and we enjoyed the peace and quiet for the evening. Thank you and if in the area again, we will definitely look you up!
We enjoyed our stay very much! Great hosts and a quiet retreat! Loved the kittens and the dogs, too! Thank you again!!
We enjoyed some cheep entertainment watching the farm cats "play" and had a restful time here. It's a fairly typical old farm in the country. Our host was friendky & welcoming he offered us a level spot near the old farm house. His offer for power was greatly appreciated because it was very warm and humid when we arrived. They're more than welcome at our spot if they come up our way.
The host was very friendly and we enjoyed visiting with him. He greeted us at the driveway entrance so we didn’t pass it up then guided us to the best spot then helped us get parked & level, he also offered us use of his electric and water. Nice peaceful country setting amongst the cornfields. Very quiet and relaxing. Would definitely stop by again if we’re ever in the area.
We very intentionally avoided highways on this trip and this stop was just what we needed after a full day on the road. Our hosts greeted us and made sure we had everything we needed, including a few very interesting stories. Beautiful rural location, friendly polar bears (ok - Great Pyrenees dogs, but they do live in igloos). Our AT&T signal was strong (about 90 Mbps), the electric and water was also quite helpful. We felt very safe and relaxed at their place and will definitely stop in if we ever pass through again.
We are in the road traveling, and spur of the moment decided to stop in this part of town, and he accommodated within a hour of our request. Such a nice spot to stop and plenty of room for the fur babies
Host was very helpful and accommodating! It was our first Boondockers experience and it couldn’t have been better. We would definitely stay here if we pass through the area again.
My wife and I had a perfect time staying at Mark's place out in the country. Quiet, spacious and safe. Mark was a great host and the man even guided me through my first RV oil change!!
If you need a place to unwind out in the country, take long walks on the road with great sunsets and fireflies then this is it!!
Great spot and hosts both! Lovely farm area made better by having water and electric hookups. Loved seeing the fireflies at night! Would definitely stay here again and recommend to others.
We really enjoyed our stay at this location. Our hosts were truly lovely people and their place is a lovely safe and quiet place to stay. He went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable and we really appreciated their kindness.
Felt right at home. Our host was ready to help the moment we turned in the driveway. Invited us to enjoy a campfire that he started earlier to burn some old wood from his farm. Relaxed and got to know a little more about each other’s experiences. Said, good night and when to have dinner in our camper. We are truly grateful for the time we got to meet our host and the hospitality we were given during our one night stay. This was first camping experience with BoondockersWelcome we are so impressed with the friendliness of our host, his wife had to work so me didn’t get to meet her however he said so many nice things about her that we feel like we know her. So glad we decided to be adventurous and give it a try!
Mark is such a great guy!
Very fun to talk too.
Great place to stay
We needed a spot for a quick overnight stay while traveling north. The host was out on their own RV adventure, but they graciously allowed us to stay at their place and gave very helpful and thorough instructions for our stay. Easy access and a nice, level spot. We hope to be in the area again someday and actually get to meet them! Thanks so much!
The host was a great guy!
He came out and guided us in.
It is a very easy entrance and turn around.
The land was beautiful!
The stars were gorgeous the night we got there.
Absolutely recommend and we will definitely be back for another night.
This was our first stay at a Boondockers Welcome. Hope they are all like this!
This place has easy access with solid road and the pad was very level with plenty of room to turn around. Loved the stay, nice and quiet. The host was very helpful and communicated very well. We really enjoyed visiting with him. Definitely recommended.
This stop was “as advertised” Easy to find. Level. We spent a few pleasant hours chatting with our hosts about several different subjects. It’s great to stop and visit with someone who has shared interest.
Will request to stay here again when in the area and hope they come see us when they travel. Highly recommend.
The Retreat at Flat Rock was peaceful and restful. Great communicated well before we arrived, was able to greet us as we pulled in, helped to direct us where to park. Had water and electric. We had such a great time talking with markew56, he's a super friendly guy. A++ recommendation!
This stop was great for us. The host is really friendly. We really appreciated the hospitality. Our toddler loved playing outside and our dog had fun going for a walk!
Our host was a great communicator. And a very knowledgable person. We would stay here again.
Beautiful spot. Elec and water hookup. Lotsa bunnies, birds and quiet. Never got to meet host but they were great with communication. Would recommend
Don't go here unless you like peace and quiet , 🌟 stars 🌟 open fields and serenity . Nice place with 50 amps electric and water. The hosts are good people friendly and helpful. The only problem here was we didn't have time to stay long enough. Hope to return thanks again.
This a great place to spend a relaxing night. markew56 was away working when we stayed, but his wife was so very helpful. We did not have the opportunity to visit and share experiences this visit, but will try to correct that if we are in that area again. We would stay here again and would recommend the location to anyone.
Mark was right on top of replying unfortunately i messed up my travel plans and was unable to stay - i texted i hope you got it...hope there was no inconvenience - thanks again
