ELECTRICITY: is limited to max 10A (Circuit Breaker) - so for modest use only please (e.g. computer, TV, gentle battery charging), NOT for high-current use (Air-con, heating, water heater, oven, kettle etc). Solar availability good - partial shade only by one tall corner redwood tree late afternoon in summer.
NB: Officially no living is allowed in RV's here, so just be subtle and quiet. Please keep our rolling gate shut!
=== SECOND RV Parking === It’s possible we can squeeze a SECOND RV into our yard (see position #2 on diagram) if it’s something small, 'skinny' and maneuverable like a Class B or C. It’s further away from the water spigot, so you’d have to alternate/share the max 10A electricity.
AVAILABILITY FOR GUESTS: We check emails at random: A same-day request might be possible, but no guarantees - depends whether we see your email in time! Also, a stay with us longer than the specified limit might be possible, depending on many factors: we'd play it by ear!
ELECTRICITY: We offer 10A maximum modest-use-only (from 15A or 30A sized outlets), at no charge.
PETS: Please keep them in your RV, or on leash. NOISE: Please no generators or long-running engines.
NO SMOKING: (on property - OK in your RV!!). TRASH: please pack your own in and out!
NB: OUR 707 PHONE NUMBER: is ye olde house phone, that does not accept texts. If it 'doesn't work', try it again; sometimes adding a '1' in front helps.
Access fine - we're on a corner of 2 town streets, not heavily used. 8" ramp from street to yard. Don't be ashamed to ask our help to steer you in - sometimes it takes us a few attempts with our own rig!
-- You need to reverse/turn off the street through a 14ft rolling gate, up an 8inch 'ramp' (low riders beware!) onto clean RV concrete pad, in secure fenced-off side yard.
-- Might not be accessible for larger RV's or Motorhomes: before you ask, please check distance from your front-nose/bumper - to - center of your rearmost-wheels : if it's less than 27ft, then you can fit OK! Any further overhang is no problem, but no wheels off our concrete pad please.
Toad/pull-truck can usually fit alongside RV, or else on the street, usually plenty of room.
Normally available year-round except if we’re traveling. Message us for availability.
[ ALTERNATIVE IN THIS AREA -- The nearest free overnight RV campsite we know about is Bear River Casino near Fortuna, 12mls away. It won't be as quiet and private as our place, but...!! ;-) For details see https://www.campendium.com/bear-river-casino. We haven't stayed there, but another Boondocker said it was OK. ]
--- Rio Dell very easy access off 101; sedate town population ~3300. 7mls north of the amazing AVENUE OF THE GIANTS, Humboldt Redwoods State Park. 13mls to pretty Victorian Ferndale (The movie 'Outbreak' was filmed there!). 25mls to Eureka. 33mls of 'Lost Coast' - a nice wild journey looping to the Redwoods.
--- Avenue Of The Giants tip: If you're approaching from the south and don't plan to stay in this area awhile, check this out on your way through: turn off 101 exit 645 at "Avenue of the Giants" road-sign (41mls south of Rio Dell; GPS 40.1797, -123.7787), and enjoy 30mls of original old 101 road running parallel to the main 101 through huge redwood trees! A 2-way road, OK for any RV; plenty of turnoff stopping places. Sadly they don't allow dogs along the walking trails ;-(
--- If you're approaching from the north down the 101, and can spare the time: between Crescent City and Eureka watch out for (a) Trees Of Mystery near Klamath, worth a visit including the cable car view (but not if it's foggy!) (b) Wild Elk often wander across the road just past Orick; (c) Trinidad - a seaside town with beautiful beaches (if not foggy): head for State Park as you drive into town: zigzag right on Stagecoach Road, then left, park and walk down to a nice beach. Also, drive Scenic Drive along its south coast. (d) Eureka will be your best/cheapest place to stock up on supplies; Food: Grocery Outlet off the 101, and Winco (no credit cards) by Harris/Henderson Streets. Free RV Dump (padlocked- paying customers get key access) at Shell station in Fortuna, 8mls north of Rio Dell!
--- Romantics: ALL COVERED BRIDGES OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY can be seen in this area! Further Details available!
--- "EUREKA WARNING" - While we'd hate to put you off visiting this area, beware if you plan to visit/stay in Eureka: sadly a couple of past guests had bad experiences. We ourselves haven't, after living this area 4yrs. Just be careful if you want to boondock there.
K and D were both very hospitable. They helped us back in our camper and get situated. We swapped some traveling stories and picked up some tips. Very kind, knowledgeable, and interesting folk. Their yard is lovely as is the area. We were enamored with the Humboldt Redwoods State Park nearby and K knows a beautiful trail only a few miles away.
Thanks so much gracious hosts!
our host couldn’t have been nicer, more responsive or helpfully complete in providing info and advice. the neighborhood is sketchy and periodically noisy (in town after all), but the countryside is gorgeous and dave shared personal insight and suggestions to help make the most of our visit to the area.
Nice hosts. Level site. Not too hard to find. Fairly quiet neighborhood.
Dave and Kim are very nice hosts. Good communication, quick replies and warm welcome. We had a interesting conversation they gave us loads of RV tips. Kim paintings really belong in this area. Thanks for your hospitality.
Easy spot to find off 101 and was kindly welcomed by Dave, who helped me back up into the spot. Had a great time chatting with Dave & Kim and certainly would stay again!
Dave and Kim are a lovely couple - super helpful with directions etc. Dave opened up the gate and helped us get parked. We enjoyed a great night's sleep - thanks Dave and Kim!
We just left Dave'n'Kim this morning. They were very helpful, gave great directions, and we had a peaceful sleep - it was very quiet! Thank you Dave'n'Kim!
We wish we could have stayed longer, but we had to head home after our Redwoods visit. They were quick to respond & accommodating to our needs. 2 thumbs up.
We can absolutely recommend you visit with Dave and Kim.
They replied quickly to our request, they went above and beyond by sending us a map of the area along with all the local information any RVer would want. (Dump sites, grocery stores, restaurants, emergency numbers, etc)
They were a pleasure to stay with and we would recommend them if you're needing a spot to stay near Avenue of the Giants.
Truly wonderful hosts! From before I got there until the time I pulled out the driveway. Both Dave n Kim were very outgoing and hospitable both days I stayed with them. They both helped me out on where to check out in town and the best path for cruising the avenue of Giants redwoods and sequoias. I recommend them for sure. Thanks again.
Truly great hosts, very polite, quick response time, and very helpful with navigating the area and sight seeing. Dave n Kim are very interesting and knowledgeable of many different things. Wonderful hosts! I definitely recommend.
Dave n' Kim were wonderful hosts. They were incredibly responsive and insightful, & full of wonderful tips about what we could do in the area to enjoy it as. Unfortunately, we couldn't take full advantage as we decided to move on to Oregon rather quickly, but we look forward to doing so down the road and hope to see them again. We appreciate their help and kindness.
First of all, the description and amount of info given is close to a professional visitor center, even better!
Don't let the neighborhood scare you off, it's all perfectly fine. You'll stay on the property behind closed gates.
Wish we could have stayed a bit longer because Dave and Kim are extremely intersting people. ( And we love that British accent!)
Thank you so much for having us
We stayed with Dave and Kim for one night on our way to the redwoods. We unfortunately had very little time to talk, but they are a really helpful and kind couple and helped us out on all the enquiries we had.
They welcome us very warmly. They open their house to us and gave us lots of rv tips. We also discussed lots of subjects like actuality, places visited or to visit...we spent a very good time. The place is very quiet.
We hope to see them again.
Spent the night at Dave & Kim's Jan. 1st 2017. I sent them a message about camping at their place that same day. Heard back from them within a few minutes. They even emailed pages of helpful information 2 minutes later. They have a nice gated back yard to park in. It was secure, quiet, and very nice. Would recommend them without a doubt.
We were warmly welcomed by our Hosts, lots of good local knowledge and RV tips. Dave helped me fix a roof vent.
Very convenient location for avenue of the giants.
We reached out to Dave and Kim last minute and they responded immediately and graciously agreed to host us. Their drive way was a little difficult to maneuver into, especially for new towers, but Dave helped us get in to the spot in one try. Both, our 17ft travel trailer and 4Runner were able to just fit on their site. They gave us information on the area and are in close proximity to the Avenue of the Giants. We enjoyed spending our day touring the giant redwoods and if we are ever back in the area, we will be sure to reach out to them again.
We stopped over at Dave & Kim's 10/6/16. They were very gracious. Dave provided lots of helpful information. Enjoyed seeing the improvements made to their RV. We may steal some for ourselves! Kathy has an art background, so we enjoyed learnng about Kim's many and varied interesting artistic endeavors. Their garden was beautiful. The parking site was smooth, level concrete. Great people to visit with!
Dave and Kim are the best hosts we've had yet! (Saying that, they're only our third, but the bar has been set!). Real pros. They provided us with a 'help doc' listing all the local amenities and a map of the local area before our arrival which helped us get through a lot in a short amounter of time thanks to not having to search for it ourselves.
All too keen to help make the
most of our stay and pursuaded us to stay an extra day to make sure we did.
Rio Dell is a quaint and cute little town cut into the hillsides around the 101. Nearby, check out Trinidad (1hr north) for Moonstone Wine tasting room (good value) and Ferndale (20min west) for its Victorian architecture and to feel like you're Dustin Hoffman in Outbreak!
Thank you Dave and Kim!
Dave'n'Kim were so kind and really went above and beyond for us. We ended up not being able to stay with them, but I appreciate all of the tips and information that they shared with us. Hopefully we'll be able to meet up with them in person one day!!
We stayed one night with Dave and Kim. They are very pleasant and kind.
The driveway is in their garden, safe and quiet.
Awesome hosts! Dave and Kim were right there to help us get in and get settled and acquainted with the general area we enjoyed a wonderful tour of their area. To include Avenue of the Giants and A charming town called Ferndale which was very Victorian. They exceeded our expectations of what a good host should represent and highly recommend them.
Dave and Kim were very welcoming and accommodating on my stay. They're property is easy to get to off highway 101, and they offer secure level parking fenced in for extra security. After missing a few turn offs to see Redwoods on my trip South, they helped me plan a trip into the Avenue of the Giants (a 30 mile alternative Redwood highway). Without their help in planning, I might have missed the Redwoods altogether. I would highly recommend this kind couple. They are great people. I hope to be back after I get back from Florida.
Not sure if we could impose on someone on the fourth of July, we instead were invited to an intimate BBQ. Kim and David were engaging, down to earth people, generously sharing information about the local must-see sites.
Don't let the looks of the eclectic neighborhood scare you, because once inside their fenced yard, you feel safe and very welcome. We stayed for two nights and would come again when in the area.
