We have one large gravel guest parking site with access to 30 Amp electrical service on "Connell Hill", our 1890's family farm. Our guest parking site requires minimum leveling. However, large rigs towing a vehicle may choose to un-hook before backing into the site which is located parallel to our machine shed, near our yard. It offers private green space for relaxing outside of your rig along with great country views in all directions. We also offer several options for exploring the farm or walking your dogs. From this parking spot, we often see deer, coyote, turkey and an occasional bald eagle. Potable water is available for filling water bottles and coolers, however we do not offer a water hook-up to a hydrant. We have excellent Verizon and AT&T cell phone access, in addition to over 20 TV stations available via standard TV antenna. Guests are welcome to relax in our covered, outdoor backyard patio area including use of its TV, fridge, sink with hot and cold running water and eating areas. We also have a Tornado "Safe Shed" available if needed during a severe storm. Well behaved pets, on a leash, are welcome as are well-supervised children. We live near a busy 4-Lane highway which provides quick, easy and convenient access and the farm is located less than 20 miles from 2 Major North-South Interstate Highways; I-29 and I-35. Suggested Local Attractions: There are several public Wildlife and Fishing areas, a paved walking and bike trail, and a large, new waterpark and swimming pool within 15 miles of us. St. Joseph, MO, about 25 miles west of our farm is home to the original Pony Express Station and Headquarters, a National Historic site, along with several other outstanding museums, a casino, a Nature Center and Museum on the banks of the Missouri River and many historic districts in addition to assorted restaurants and shopping options. Shatto Dairy is a large family owned dairy that offers farm tours and many flavors of freshly bottled milk along with home-made cheeses, ice-cream and butter. The dairy is just a few miles from our farm. We are also close to the nationally recognized Missouri Star Quilt Company, home to a large collection of quilting related shops in Hamilton, MO. We are about an hour north of Kansas City and all of its historical and entertainment options including Worlds of Fun, Swope Park Zoo, the Royals and Chiefs home stadiums, a NASCAR Race Track, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Home, the Jesse James home and farm and all kinds of shopping along with Kansas City's famed barbeque restaurants.

House Rules

Please call approximately 1 hour before your anticipated arrival so we can be sure to be available to help you get set up. And we ask that you arrive before dark. Children are welcome to play in our large, grassy yard. However, parents are asked to supervise them closely and to keep them away from all farm equipment, growing crops or the driveway leading to the highway. Well-behaved pets, on a leash, are also welcome here on the farm. Please be sure you clean up after them. Please, no smoking or alcohol consumption in our yard or outdoor patio area. ILLEGAL DRUG USAGE IS NOT ALLOWED ANYWHERE on our property. Guests are welcome to use our outdoor patio area before 10:00 p.m. It includes a full-sized fridge/freezer, sink with hot and cold water for dishwashing, two eating areas, a TV and multiple electric plug-ins. Just clean-up after yourselves and place any trash, in bags, in designated trash cans. We have a large vegetable garden in our backyard and enjoy sharing its bounty with our guests when excess is available. We live in an area prone to dryness most of the summer. Therefore, we ask that our guests have no open fires. And, most of all, we want you to relax, soak in the beauty of the surrounding countryside and make yourself at home. Welcome to Connell Hill!!

Location

Access Road Conditions: We have a moderate hill coming up our gravel driveway off a 4-Lane, paved highway. When you get to the top of our driveway turn left, towards the small, dark gray-green rental house adjoining our property, until you get straightened out. Then you will be ready to back into our designated parking area parallel to our machine shed. We have plenty of level, back-in parking space for both your rig and your tow vehicle. Our site, suitable for all sizes, is on gravel with 30 Amp electric service nearby. Tow Vehicle Parking Details: We have plenty of tow vehicle parking available. However, many overnight guests with travel or 5th wheel trailers choose to stay hooked up during their visits and our site is large enough to easily accommodate that option.

Life-long Road Trippers Details: Hello from the "Missouri Birds", hosts to more than 100 Harvest Hosts or Boondockers Welcome guests. Ken is a retired over-the-road truck owner/operator and Robin, a retired NW Missouri Mom/Teacher/Farmer raising corn, soybeans, hogs and kids---not necessarily in that order. Robin also worked as an ag consultant in Ukraine, an advertising and marketing specialist in New York and spent 10 years teaching 5th and 6th grade Social Studies in Missouri. Today, we live on our Historic Family Farm located on "Connell Hill" east of St. Joseph and north of Kansas City, Missouri. Both of us are history buffs and when not "Road-Tripping" or hosting guests we keep busy with a large vegetable and flower garden, sharing good food and good times with friends and neighbors, and participating in church activities. We have 9 living children and 50+ grand and great-grand-children in our blended family. We love exploring our beautiful country and we sincerely look forward to hosting guests here on the farm, learning about their travels and life experiences and gathering new ideas for places we need to add to our "bucket list". We have visited 49 states including two road-trips to Alaska and most of Canada. Each year we look forward to hosting visitors and sharing tips for things to see and do all across North America. Home Town: We both grew up on Missouri farms, Ken in Central Missouri and Robin, here on "Connell Hill". Our home was not quite completed when Robin's family bought the farm in 1892. It has remained in the family ever since and we are proud to call it home. "Connell Hill" is about 25 miles East of St. Joseph, MO, home to Jesse James and the Pony Express and about 55 miles North of Kansas City and Independence, MO. U.S. Highway 36, formally called the "Peak to Peak Highway" and originally called the "Hound Dog Trail", first came through our family farm in the mid 1800's. The ruts from that original stagecoach trail can still be seen along the south side of our yard and garden. Robin remembers feeding cattle on the old road just west of our house with her Dad using a horse-drawn wagon during mud season! The first full-time resident of DeKalb County built a one-room log cabin for his family where our house now stands and traded with the Native Americans who had a camp just a mile west of our farm. The Pony Express started in St. Joseph and during that same time period St. Joseph Missouri was one of the primary "Jumping off points" for the pioneers headed out on the Oregon and California Trails. Historians tell us that during the busiest portion of the Wagon Train days, the line of wagons waiting to take the ferry across the Missouri River in St. Joseph would often back up all the way to our farm! So, we welcome you to the area where the west begins. Favorite Boondocking Locations: We primarily stay in small town parks or public campgrounds, including Corps of Engineer parks and an occasional Fairgrounds, where electricity is available for Ken's CPAP machine. We have also had great experiences staying with Boondockers Welcome hosts in several different states. Skills or Expertise to Share: Ken is excellent at providing driving directions/tips for almost anywhere, as he spent his entire life as an over-the-road truck driver. Robin has 50+ years experience in planning travel adventures throughout North America. She has extensive knowledge of US history, geography and roadside sites. Both love to share their experiences while staying in all types of campgrounds and visiting unique places throughout Canada and in every state except Hawaii .

The best part of this place was the cheer that greeted us upon arrival, along with home made cookies. Ken & Robin are the perfect hosts. I hope we travel their way again.

The family was so nice, the Mrs. gave us homemade muffins and provided a box of literature and local tourist sites. Not too far of a drive to Hamilton and Missouri Star Quilt Company.

This would be our second visit, such a nice welcoming family! We live in Minnesota and winter in south Texas so we don't have to go far out of our way to stop, such great people!

Nice level spot with electric. The plus is you can take an extra day to rest for your travels because they host for more than one night. Super nice and loved talking about travel on the road. :-)
