After hosting well over 50 guests in only 1-1/2 years we have recently felt a need to change our host site. For our former guests, I deeply apologize and hope you will return regardless your rig size and status, and for everyone else I hope you will understand.
Preference will be given to guests that are, or have been, Boondockers Welcome HOSTS. We strongly support fellow CAMPERS that make this wonderful site work! Not saying we won’t host a full-time RVer, but we have recently had several “guests” (all full time RVers wanting FREE everything to avoid a mortgage) who wanted to treat us like an RV park and be rude and complain. If this is your idea of being a guest, PLEASE just keep on going down the road! There are 2 Wal-marts in the area that allow overnight parking.
Now with that out of the way….
Our location is 2 miles south of I-40 off exit 121. Hickory is in the foothills of western North Carolina, and is about 1 hour east of Asheville, 1 hour west of Winston-Salem, 1 hour north of Charlotte and 1 hour south of Boone, NC. Site is beside a barn and is level, but having trouble adding more pictures!!! Hahaha! It’s an old person thing😂
We are having a water shortage in our area due to the drought, so we are not allowing water hookup at this time. However, we can bring water to you in 5 gallon increments if needed from our home, which is on a different well. Please arrive with a full tank of fresh water.
READ ALL OF THE RULES. - ours and the Boondockers Welcome site before requesting this location.
Preference will be given to fellow Boondockers Welcome HOSTS. Fellow hosts are what make this whole thing work!
Be respectful of our property and those nearby.
Let us know exactly when you are arriving. This allows us to also plan our day and not sit around all day waiting. If you need to change your expected ETA please give us a call.
This means calling when 15 minutes prior to arrival for specific instructions on parking! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING ON PREMISES!! NO EXCEPTIONS! Also, no grills that sit on the ground, and if a grill is used it must be located in front of your camper (pasture side, not barn side). This site is beside where round bale hay is stored and a grass fire could ignite the hay and there would be no way to extinguish the fire.
Access is 1/4 mile up a well maintained gravel lane that only is on a dead end with only 1 house beyond the camp site and is very quiet and peaceful. There is plenty of room to pull in, back up and turn around if needed. The site is a pull-through. It is on a hill next to a large 2 story barn with 18’ lean to’s with storage for round bale hay, and overlooks a horse pasture. The farm is 25 acres and adjoins another 100 acres of wooded walking/ horseback riding trails that go down to a river.
Hence the reason we ask for a 10-15 call prior to arrival….
If you are in an RV the size of a tour bus you may have trouble making the turn off the road because the back end may drag on the roadway. We have negotiated this driveway for almost 40 years with large horse trailers, dovetail gooseneck trailers and campers and know how to safely drive across the grade and will be glad to make suggestions for all of you “flat landers”. If you choose to use the drive-through (rather than backing in) the turn off the gravel road is tight. We can help…. You may also experience problems leaving when turning on to the paved road with bottoming out. Again, we can explain how to do this safely if your ego will allow.
There is ample room both in front or behind your camper to park another vehicle.
We are usually available for hosting, however, we also enjoy last minute excursions ourselves and may be unavailable. Please feel free to contact us to see if the welcome mat is out and the lights are on!
Please read the Boondockers code of conduct and our entire site rules prior to booking.
Easy access to the mountains of NC via Hwy 321 and Hwy 181, and I-40 east and west.
Wonderful hosts and their property is just beautiful. Very convenient for a night (and wish I had even more time). Super knowledgeable RVers and gave me some handy tips. Hope to return someday!
Thank you for such a wonderful stay nice meeting your other guest and enjoying desert together! I rested so we'll to continue on my journey.. Til we meet again!
This was our first ever Boondockers Welcome stay and it was delightful in every way. Bill and Jan were so welcoming and friendly, and their property was gorgeous. One of our favorite moments was watching their two horses graze in the meadow, while the fireflies flickered in the dusk, and the moon rose above us. We highly recommend this place, and we hope to visit again whenever we're back in the area.
This was an amazing place to boondock.
Peaceful, relaxed and had everything we needed.
Thanks so much to our hosts for providing a quiet restful and beautiful location for the night. Perfect place for weary travelers to enjoy after a long hot day. What a friendly couple! Hopefully on their next trip west, they will stop at Hidden in The Trees. We would be honored to host you.
The hosts are incredibly welcoming and accommodating. I was met at the road and led to the parking site, asked if I needed anything and even invited to dinner. These hosts have worked hard to install 30 amp eletrical service and other amenities. Mrs. Heartwood Farm and I chatted for several hours; these people are interesting, well traveled and quickly became friends. I hope to return before I leave this area in six weeks. The farm is quiet, peaceful, beautiful and the views are amazing. My only neighbors were two lovely horses. If one is in the area, I wholeheartedly recommend Heartwood Farm.
Another fantastic stay at Heardwood Farms. An amazing location and wonderful folks!
“The owners of Heartwood Farms are very kind, gracious and welcoming. The parking spot is next to their barn and has a magnificent view of their pasture, so I enjoyed watching the two beautiful horses graze and frolic about. It is very quiet and the woods behind the barn lead to a beautiful river and make for a fantastic hike. The parking spot was perfect for my Jeep and 20 foot travel trailer. We had long conversations about a variety of subjects as they are well-traveled and bright professionals. Like some of the other kind folks who have hosted me, they also mentioned having had just a few "guests" that were very demanding and unappreciative of their generosity and willingness to open their "home" to strangers for a FREE stay. Fellow boondockers, please be aware that it is your responsibility to be prepared for an unusual setup. These homes are not paid RV parks and the fact that they even OFFER a 30 AMP plug and water is out of the goodness of their hearts to help others. If you want to enjoy the luxury of FREE, be prepared to reach the outlet or spigot that might normally be well within reach at a “paid” RV park or forestry campsite. Lastly, if you drive a 40 foot rig, READ their instructions carefully. If you are accustomed to using simple pull-throughs on pavement and have not learned to maneuver your rig in tighter situations, do not blame your hosts (whomever or wherever they are) for your lack of expertise. It is up to us...the "non-hosts" members of boondockers welcome, to reciprocate the kindness and appreciation for these generous folks or suffer the consequences of having to PAY for parking in overcrowded RV parks or Walmarts which have ZERO amenities and are becoming less and less available. I highly recommend this location as it is one of my favorites after having traveled full-time for 2 years and through 25 states. “
Heartwood Farms are exceptional hosts. They were very accommodating with our schedule change, met us at the site when we arrived, and gave us recommendations for things to do in the area. We loved Hickory and found it very family friendly. Beautiful site!! Would love to come again!
Awesome Hosts, Bill kept in touch and met us at driveway entrance. So peaceful and serene the spot overlooked the horse and pasture. Driveway a little steep we drove our 34 ft fifth wheel and duel wheel pick up truck had no problem getting in. Well water was awesome. Would recommend this place highly. Thank you for everything.
I had a perfect stay, eventhough I could not meet the hosts. Gorgious area + received tons of advice.
Thank you for the great generosity.
Our family truly enjoyed staying at Heartwood Farm. The hosts were great, very friendly, and we enjoyed our chats with them. The parking location was beautiful, alongside the barn, and we even took a short hike down to the river behind the property. Quiet and peaceful.
For larger rigs: the approach is a steep hill straight off of the semi-busy country road. The back of our 34ft 5th wheel was close to bottoming out on the way up at the steep incline to the lane from the main road.
This is a favorite spot of mine. The view is beautiful, and the parking spot is level and easy to maneuver. Couldn't ask for nicer hosts! Thanks so much.
This is a wonderful spot, flat and comfortable. I love the view of of the horse in the pasture, and you can't get more peaceful than this! Thanks so much.
I enjoyed my stay here, Bill and Jan are very good hosts making sure your stay is the best experience. If your in the area look them up, you won't be disappointed.
This is one of the best places I have stayed. Jan and Bill were so helpful to make my stay very pleasant. I highly recommend them if your in the area.
Host was very helpful and wanted to make sure our arrival went off without a hitch. As he was not going to be present when we were due to arrive, he facetimed with us the day before and visually walked us through the approach to the drive in as well as the hookup details. It was a beautiful site and we would most definitely return. 38ft 5th wheel
We really enjoyed our stay at this host. They were very accommodating, even though it rained most of the time.
Hosts were great. He met us at bottom of drive to take us back lane. Beautiful view from site. Having water and electric was a great bonus as we needed to stay because of a brake problem. (1 side was fried). He was very helpful......all we had to do was ask if we needed anything. He even picked up something for us from auto parts store. We would definitely come back again. Highly recommend.
Awesome secluded spot in the hills of Carolina. Very accommodating family and great property. The fire pit was a nice touch and came in handy. Thanks guys!
My hosts could not have been friendlier or more accommodating. They made my arrival seamless by meeting me at the foot of their road (a somewhat narrow and rough country lane but absolutely no challenge even to my 39' Class A towing a Mini Cooper). They got me settled in a great location overlooking a lea that usually would have their horses but had been "defenced" by recent bad weather. The view was still beautiful, though. 30 amp service and water completed the "package". I would ask to stay again at Heartwood in a heart beat!
We truly enjoyed meeting Bill and Jan, and are grateful that they went out of their way to organize a gathering of the 3 RVers who were all staying at the same time! They reached out to all of us, gave up an entire evening of their own time, and even provided snacks :-). Thank you both for a most enjoyable stay, for parking guidance, and for good conversation.
I love Heartwood Farm so much! Have repeatedly stayed here during my North Carolina tour. The view of the horse pasture, the privacy and most of all my gracious hosts are what makes Heartwood Farm so special.
Jan and Bill are wonderful hosts and the pasture view and privacy are unmatched. All this plus electrical hookup keep me coming back. Thank you again Bill and Jan!
We stayed here for 2 nights and absolutely loved it! Bill’s place is beautiful and he was very helpful and met us on the road and showed us the way in. Water and electricity provided and what a fantastic host! We loved our stay, very peaceful and beautiful wish we could have stayed longer.
Our first plan fell through (we got delayed and couldn’t make it that far), and I messaged the host when we were 2 hours out. They not only accepted our stay but welcomed us at their driveway. Wonderful hosts, peaceful setting, and electric/water. If we had time, we would have tried to stay another night!
The hosts were very nice. We enjoyed our stay at Heartwood Farm. The views were fantastic! Thank you.
The hosts were very kind and we enjoyed staying on their farm. Great views! Thank you Heartwood Farms for being so gracious.
Heartwood Farm meets my checklist for perfect boondocking:
*Friendly, welcoming and interesting hosts you'd be honored to call friends.
* Private, lush space with a lovely view.
*Horses and pups
*Water and Electric
I LOVE Heartwood Farm.
Thank you Bill and Jan!
Bill and Jan could not have been more welcoming, warm, friendly, generous and helpful! Their farm is utterly charming, and we were most grateful for the amenities they offered. I only wish we could have stayed longer! Our stay was cut short due to several leaks in our slides that necessitated cutting our stay short and returning home for repairs. We were so looking forward to chatting more with Bill and Jan about their travels, RV expertise, RV renovations and more. And to take advantage of their kind offer to hike the trails on their wooded acres. But more, to spend time with those kind of wonderful folks we so often find on our RV travels....the kind of folks you'd like to keep in touch with, the kind of friends you'd like to keep. Thank you Bill and Jan...we so hope to see u again soon!
great hosts we spent some time getting to know each other and talking about life in the world and I had a really good time they have 30 amp, water, great private location.
Great location, right off the highway. Easy access.
Wonderful, friendly Hosts.
Beautiful setting. Electric and water available.
Would stay again when on the area.
This was our 1st experience using Boondockers while traveling the US in our 34' fifth wheel. Our hosts were very friendly, accommodating and had nice suggestions. We were here mainly to visit the Hickory Furniture Mart which is very close by. We have T-Mobile and 1 newer phone picked up a signal but 3 year old phone didn't. Watch the turn off the main road as they caution. We have self leveling jacks that just cleared, take it slow and up the road with a bit of a grade. Beautiful pasture view! They had firewood for our use but we didn't have a fire during our 3 night stay.
We were not ready to go home from our short trip quite yet and really appreciated HWFP welcoming us at the last minute. A nice quiet level spot. Great to learn about their E bikes too!
Very welcoming hosts, beautiful location.
Willing to host us on short notice.
We wish we could have stayed longer!
This place is beautiful. The view from the campsite is breathtaking. It overlooks a huge horse pasture where 2 lovely horses come to visit. Our hosts are wonderful and kind people. They met us on arrival and got us settled in. They are currently putting in a 30a plug so AC in the summer won't be an issue.
It's very quiet and the parking area is pretty far away from the other houses on the road.
We will definitely come again. We highly recommend this place.
Stayed here again due to RV problems. I can't say enough about how nice these hosts are to guests. Waking up to the horses and beautiful view make this a special spot. Thanks again so much.
Very friendly folks who offered both water and power. I had a restful and pleasant stay. Thanks so much.
