Host Location Description:
High banked 1/2 mile dirt car racing at Wythe Raceway! Bleacher seating or bring your own and sit in the terraces. Excellent view everywhere! Enjoy a cold Pepsi and one of our bologna burgers with fries! Open from April to September on most Saturday nights. Some special events may be on a Friday or Sunday, please check website at www.wytheraceway.com
Pavement from interstate 81, Radio Dr. and Race Track Rd. Entrance to the track is to the RIGHT about 100 yards on Race Track Rd.
Maintain good speed as there is a slight grade on Race Track Rd. prior to turning RIGHT.
Mixed gravel and pavement once you enter the track property.
Parking: If there is no race scheduled then the entire parking lot is open for you to park anywhere. If there is a race scheduled, it would be best to park on the right, by the woodline, just past the entrance to the pits. There are two small ticket buildings on the left that will indicate where the pit entrance is. The track itself is to the left. Google Earth works great!
If we have snow and ice and you don't feel confident driving up to the track, we have an alternate area to park. This area is the parking lot where the big sign with the race car on top is with multiple semi trailers. You can access by turning directly into it from Radio Dr. 20 feet past Race Track Rd.
Pets: They can be unleashed at your discretion.
Exploring: There are gates, but walking, bikes, golf carts are permitted most anywhere. The track has 250 acres with numerous trails, creeks, a pond etc.
Stay Request: IF you do not hear from us within 24 hours of your request, you may assume that we accepted it.
Covid-19: Wythe County was one of the last few counties in Virginia that had zero cases. We held out as long as we could, until a business traveler ended that.
As of 1-19-21. We have 1631 reported cases and 31 deaths. Most locals are compliant with current guidelines.
But if you get a chance we appeciate positive reviews on the following platforms..
Thanks for your consideration.
Pavement and gravel, somewhat of a steep grade on Race Track Rd. prior to turning RIGHT onto the Race Track Property.Maintain good speed on Race Track Road once you turn off of Radio Dr.
Remember to turn bear RIGHT at the top of the hill!
None, as this is a very large area.
Yearly. In the summer during weekends be prepared for car racing and/or limited parking space for late arrivals. During the first part of October the track hosts a dirt bike race. There entire place will be full of campers, but it's quite an event to watch.
Winter could bring snow and make it difficult to pull up into the actual track parking itself, in that situation we would recommend parking in the gravel lot beside Race Track rd. If that is the case, do not turn on to Race Track Rd, but turn into the gravel lot 50 feet past Race Track road. There are semi truck trailers parked there and it's easy to turn around and setup.
Here are some suggested places to visit all are withing 15 minutes or so from the track. With the closest listed first. Wytheville locations are better suited for I-81 Northbound Travlers/I-77 North and South.
Dutch Pantry, Amish foods, Rural Retreat
Food Country, grocery, Rural Retreat
Harpo's Hardware, propane, Rural Retreat
Rural Retreat Lake and Campground, camping, Rural Retreat
Car Quest, Rural Retreat
Log House Dining, Wytheville
My stay was accepted on short notice and I was the only one at the entire track in November. Fred came by to check in after my first night and made me feel welcome. Very convenient spot off the highway.
Fred's track is a throw back for me i thoroughly enjoyed. Grew up near 2 dirt tracks. I could just about see, hear and smell it all!
Arrived during twilight and easily found our site. Frrd and Perry's directions are spot on to a level area. At 2500' the temp dropped quickly when the 20-30 mph winds arrived. Honestly, i love this January weather! It brought a nice sunrise too.
We spent a nice quiet night at the racetrack. Easy in and out. Fred came by to make sure we were comfortable. Very good host. We want to come back to see the races.
Enroute to Florida from Ohio. Arrived late before rain hit. Very nice high up dry area to spend a very quiet night. Would have liked to walk the area but rain and fog prevailed so we continued our journey south the next morning. Would like to return for a race event someday Thank you for a nice place to pull off the highway and rest.
Right off highway. WIDE open space for newbies like me to easily park RV. Very cool to walk the racetrack while not in operation. My dog enjoyed sniffing the grounds, too! Thank you!
A very convenient location. Easy in and out. We did not meet our host but want to send thanks for a very enjoyable stay.
Location is convenient for those traveling through, nearby hardware store and grocery options. Large and level grassy site with good mountain views.
Highway 81 is nearby and the noise is there, it gets less noisy at night and we had a good sleep.
Driving in/ out was easy following the signs, but be aware of the gravel at the split where you see “pit entrance” sign, the pavement turns into gravel and cause spinning on wheels, so put on 4x4 before the split.
Thank you Peery for having us stay!
We had a very enjoyable stay! We were able to visit with the host shortly after arrival. Very peaceful night and will definitely recommend!
We stayed here for one night while traveling from Pittsburgh to Georgia. We had read reviews about Fred maybe coming out and greeting us and taking us down on the track… It’s all true! The place has a pretty cool history and Fred is clearly proud of it and it shows. We had tons of room with plenty of spaces to choose from that were nice and flat. It was crazy windy, but we felt very safe. Would stay here again!
I stayed just outside the track area with a beautiful view of the valley. The owner was very pleasant and checked to make sure i had everything I needed before leaving. All in all - a great experience....
Stayed at fred's 2 nights. Had ti cut our visit short. fred met up with us.... told us if the track history and took us for a spin around there track. we were disappointed we couldn't stay for Saturday night racing
Fred was a gracious host. We enjoyed watching the races as we arrived on race night, and Ace, our Lab, was able to run around and explore the open spaces. My granddaughter had never been to a stock car race and it has been several decades since I have been to one. My former husband was a race car junky when he was young, but gave it all up for family. It was fun reminiscing. We would love to stop again when in the area.
Love the serenity and on a clear night, the sky here is incredible.
Very quiet place, and we were welcomed on arrival. Walked a couple laps on the track, and had a quiet evening.
We really enjoyed our stay here. This area is beautiful. Our host had maps of scenic routes for us to look at. Friendly people, great spot. Very quiet and dark at night
A gracious host and a wonderful, quiet night under the stars. The large parking area available made us feel alone even though we were not the only boondockers there. Would definitely stay again when in the area. Thanks for your continuing support to the RV community.
super quiet overnight stay. The big flat grassy parking area is on a little rise above the racetrack. Nice view of the mountains! Fred came by when I arrived and again when I was leaving to make sure I was OK and had everything I needed. Super nice and very accommodating host! Great overnight stop near I-81.
Not only did we get to stay on the property, which super convenient to the highway, it turned out the Labor Day race was that night, so we got to see the races.
I can't begin to describe how neat this place is the owner came to greet us as he did prior we had nice conversation learned a lot about him. he sure is interesting the docking area is clean & quiet it's the perfect place to boondock.
Thanks for an amazing experience
We talked to our host for at least an hour. He has lead a very interesting life and we found there were many things we had in common. The spot in which we camped was level and just outside that dirt track of the raceway. It was next to the expressway, but noise wasn't a problem for us. Beautiful area in the mountains. If we travel through the area again, we would love to visit again.
When we first got there we thought we just were going to bed. But the owner of the race track pulled up to our camper and told to wait for a couple minutes and he would come back. When he returned he was in an old car and gave us a tour of the whole track and how it was built. He even let my son drive in the track. If you ever come down to Virginia you should definitely stay here .
We spent our first boondocker experience at a race track in the beautiful hills of Virginia with Fred. His track is very nice and a fast high banked 1/2 mile.
He was there to greet us and gave hubby a ride around the track.
He place we parked was just beautiful. We slept soundly and will be back for a big race for sure.
Thanks FB for fabulous experience!!
Only stayed one night but look forward to coming back to the area to stay a little longer and take in a race night. Easy access off of Interstate 81. We did not get to meet the host but communication was always prompt and clear.
Fred is a great host. Stopped by to welcome us and showed us several good spots we could chose from to set up. Easy on and off interstate but far enough to be very quiet at night. Saw a few deer on edge of parking lot.
staying with this host was amazing, lol at least for my rig mate who loves racing. Fred even took us for a ride around the track. Fred is a hard work man that's for sure with an amazing sweet wife. Truly hope to see them again in our travels. Take care Fred with much love from Mary Mealer and Brian Carder.
This was a great stop. Very relaxing environment Fred was a super host. I had a great chat with him and found his travel experiences very interesting. I hope we get the chance to travel through the area again and get to stop and see him.
Awesome overnight spot. Very peaceful spot overlooking the track. My only recommendation when leaving the parking area, take the road you came up on, not the road to the left (south). I'm 12ft and just missed the wire and it's a rougher route. My mistake completely. So when headed up follow the owners directions and when you merge to the right, take the left road. Take that same road down 😁 Thanks again! We will stay again.
Very close to freeway. Quiet & plenty of flat area to park. Didn't even have to do any leveling. Our very first boondicking experience. Thank you Fred!
Last night we stayed at Wythe Race Way in Rural Retreat Virginia. It was a wonderful place to stay. Right next to the dirt track with a beautiful view of the mountains. Our host was a very friendly and interesting man. He showed us around the grounds and made us feel very much at home. would gladly stay there again.
We found our way to the track parking lot on our own as Fred was not there and he did not answer his phone. If he had added to his welcome message to follow the sign to the Pit Parking it would have helped us get situated. There is plenty of room and much of it is level. Clearly one would not want to be there for boondocking on a race day. As it is the track is otherwise closed during the time of covid 19.
We were very grateful to have a lovely quiet night by ourselves boondocking. We certainly would stay again if we needed a place in the area.
