High banked 1/2 mile dirt car racing at Wythe Raceway! Bleacher seating or bring your own and sit in the terraces. Excellent view everywhere! Enjoy a cold Pepsi and one of our bologna burgers with fries! Open from April to September on most Saturday nights. Some special events may be on a Friday or Sunday, please check website at www.wytheraceway.com or Facebook.
Pavement from interstate 81, Radio Dr. and Race Track Rd. Entrance to the track is to the RIGHT about 150 yards on Race Track Rd.
Maintain speed as you cliumb the hill on Race Track Rd.
TURN RIGHT at top of the grade on Race Track Rd. Sign in front of you says Wythe Raceway, it's preferable to see it passing the driver's door, unless you like backing your rig down a dead end dirt road, if so, go any direction you wish.
Large and mostly gravel. If the conditions are dry, you can park anywhere, even grass areas, even wet, most of those allow driving. If you have doubts, then park in any of the main areas. There are several parking lots, so drive in and look, there is plenty of room to do a 180 so that you are pointing back towards the entrance.
Leashed or unleashed at your discretion. We have two that we bring when we work.
Check the place out on Google Earth. You will see Rattlesnake Hare Scrambles. That is our motorcycle race that we have annually, since the 70's. There are a lot of trails that can be mountain biked or even walked. Most of the trails are well maintained.
I admin the Boondockers page, I travel with an RV to dirt bike races, some have NO cell service.
If you do not hear from me, then is ok to assume the request IS accepted.
If you would take your time and give us a nice review on Google, Trip Advisor, etc,,,we would certainly appreciate it!!
We like guest photos and mention that you were a Boondockers Welcome guest too.
Not long ago I had an elderly guest that said she felt "unsafe" with the highway being so close and no one else in the parking lot. The drive to Wythe Raceway is a heck of a lot more dangerous than parking at Wythe Raceway.
So here is the thing, if your there and something does not seem right, send me a message. I can be there in 10 minutes.
We have resources, we just are not setup to deliver them like an RV park. If your in a bind and need water, we can get that, if you need some temporary power we can get that. If your having mechanical issues we can probably help,
There is not much we can't facilitate, either, directly or indirectly.
We are very informal.
Don't park in the main travel areas, we call them roads, lol.
There is a dumpster up top across from the grandstand ticket booth.
Paved roads from interstate to track.
READ! Once you turn onto Race Track Rd. Prepare to TURN RIGHT at the top of the hill, roughly 150 yards.
There is a sign that says Wythe Raceway. If you turn left it is a dead end dirt road and you will have to back out to turn around.
1 out 10 people do this, although they never admit it, lol.
The track handles semi trucks, so there should be no issues.
Same as RV.
Yearly. In the summer during weekends be prepared for car racing and/or limited parking space for late arrivals. During the first part of October the track hosts a dirt bike race. There entire place will be full of campers, but it's quite an event to watch.
Winter could bring snow and make it difficult to pull up into the actual track parking itself, in that situation we would recommend parking in the gravel lot beside Race Track rd. If that is the case, do not turn on to Race Track Rd, but turn into the gravel lot 50 feet past Race Track road. There are semi truck trailers parked there and it's easy to turn around and setup.
Here are some suggested places to visit all are withing 15 minutes or so from the track. With the closest listed first. Wytheville locations are better suited for I-81 Northbound Travlers/I-77 North and South.
Dutch Pantry, Amish foods, Rural Retreat
Food Country, grocery, Rural Retreat
Harpo's Hardware, propane, Rural Retreat
Rural Retreat Lake and Campground, camping, Rural Retreat
Car Quest, Rural Retreat
Log House Dining, Wytheville
We very much enjoyed our visit to the Wythe Raceway and in particular our chat with the owner. He is a man of incredible experience and if it weren’t raining we would have loved to share stories to late into the evening. The parking area is expansive, mostly level and gravel based. Our dog had lots of fun playing fetch in the large area next to where we parked. Would love to return on race night and experience the living history of this classic landmark.
This great location is just off the 81, so it was super convenient for a layover on our LONG road trip. It was quiet and secluded. Very private and we parked at an area near a tree lined path, but the best part of this charming and cool spot is the host! So kind and accommodating! We ran into some problems and showed up after midnight (1:30am to be exact!) and it was ideal for us! Thank you for hosting us!
This has to be the best boondock ever ! I met "Mr Fred" and part of his family,( Chris, Dawn and Mrs. Brown. His son Perry had gone to a motorcycle event so didn't meet him. Maybe next time. We enjoyed Sat. nite dirt track races.and explored the town of Rural Retreat. Mr. Fred said he's 83 but I told him he has to be 125 to have done all the things he's done in life and he's still sharp as a tack. Great Folks,
Lull me to sleep. Easy on easy off highway.
The host provided great communication and they had ample space with hard level parking. Good Verizon service.
Would certainly return again - hopefully when there is a race to watch next time.
It honestly had never occurred to me to go to the races on Saturday night - but then I came across this place while looking for a place to stay overnight, and it was perfect! We thoroughly enjoyed the races, a quiet nights sleep afterwards and a slow, lovely morning. Perfectly level place to park, and great big open fields to exercise our dog in the morning. Fred was very welcoming and stopped by to see how we were doing. It was a pleasure to meet the man behind such a cool community treasure. Thank you for doing what you are doing and for hosting us! We will definitely return if in the area.
We really enjoyed staying here and on a race night. It was a restful and quiet spot to stay.
We are planning on stopping for a race on our way home. Sat. 8/21. Will stay the night. Looking forward to visiting everyone again!
Rock'n and Roland, and Baxter too!
Cool breeze and a quiet night's rest. Would definitely stay here again. Turn left on the road before the sign and be sure to get up a little speed before turning right up the gravel road. We're a big rig and spun out a little towing our fifth wheel but our front tires are soon to be replaced so that could have been us. Just know ahead there is an incline on loose gravel once you turn right. But it was no biggie, we made it and it was so nice with a pretty view. Wish we could of stayed another night for the race. Looks like fun! Another Boondocker's Welcome gem.
Very convenient location. Easy in and out. Lots of room. And Fred is a great guy. He gave us a quick tour and history of the track and facility, which was very cool. We were in the area to visit friends, but had planned on taking in the race Saturday night as well, but unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate for the event. But! That gives us a good excuse for another trip to the area.
Close to the interstate, quiet, plenty of space for multiple rigs. The lot is quite level and we had plenty of room to choose from so we could leave some space between our site and other campers. Kids loved the track and wandering through the on-site trails.
Really cool location and Fred is a great guy. Race was rained out which was a bummer but was still awesome to see the track he built 50 years ago!
Great place to stay. Was quiet and felt safe staying here. I would recommend this place to stay and will stay here again.
Quiet and safe. Close to 77 and easy to find. Huge field that is easily accessible for any size camper. Level and clear. Thanks !
After several farms, this was the perfect diversion to break up our trip from Florida to Ohio. We stayed on a Saturday night and I could not believe how many locals came to the races. I’m not a racing fan, but seeing it live is a totally different and very cool experience!
This was my first Boondockers Welcome experience and I don’t think it could get any better than this. Besides their amazing venue, Wythe Raceway, which was built by the owner 50 years ago, this family of father and son and wives were the kindest and most welcoming people I have ever met. They go out of their to take care of you. The owner and his wife have wonderful stories about their adventures here and in Central America traveling by motorcycle and the son’s wife is a motorcycle racer! They are also super laid back. I highly recommend these hosts and hope to return some day!
Easy, short drive from I81. Beautiful level spot with plenty of room to turn around. TOP of the hill with a breathtaking sunset!!! We even got to watch a celebrity NASCAR driver practice AND take a ride on the track with Fred who was a funny and amazing host. We learned a lot about dirt racing too. We were pleasantly surprised to be able to sleep with the windows open in mid JUNE and still got cold enough to turn off the fans in the middle of the night. Quiet, peaceful night’s sleep. We will definitely be back.
We needed a night sleep, host was welcoming and kind! Quiet and flat, no blocks needed. Highly recommend!
We enjoyed our shaded spot at the racetrack, hopefully the next time we can time it to see a race. Thanks for hosting us.
We enjoyed our time at Wythe Raceway. Sadly we weren't able to stay for a race but the kids still enjoyed getting to take a look at the track. The hosts stopped by to say hi and they were very friendly. We parked in the large grassy area near the ticket booth. Easy to access off of 81. There is a bit of a hill coming in, but we didn't have trouble in our 38-foot 5th wheel. Plenty of room to turn around when you get up to the top. Felt safe and it was quiet, with the interstate noise being only slightly noticeable. We drove up to New River Gorge National Park while parked at this location which was about an hour and 45-minute drive.
We would stay again.
Thanks for being Boondockers Welcome hosts!
This place is an easy stop over for the night off of 81. Plenty of space, great directions and communication. Easy as pie! And racing on Saturday nights! Awesome!
Our stay at Wythe Raceway was great. We had great conversations with Fred and his wife as well as neighboring campers. Many thanks for the opportunity.
What a great stay. A super night of car racing while parked at trackside. If you are going to be nearby, this is a must stop.
We really enjoyed our stay here! The race track is so much fun and the views around the are very pretty. It was a level spot to park and we slept well!
Pulled into an open parking lot and set up.
Plenty of room to spread out. Unfortunately with the weather, there was no race, but still a pleasant evening, got in a good walk around the racetrack and down a wooded trail.
Fun location on the race track. No races while I was there but my dogs and I enjoyed walking around it. Had another boondocker on site and enjoyed the visit. Didn't see my host but very appreciate of the stay!
Nice overnight stay on our travels. Very friendly. Level place to park.
Easy on and off the highway. Great place to overnight. Lots of room. Will be back!
This was my second time here and I plan on a third time to see a race. If you book, don't ask where to park. When you get there, a big parking lot will be obvious.
This was my first Boondock and I am definitely returning. I was greated by an amazing person with more life experiences than anyone else I've meet and given we are both story tellers with much in common, I had a great time. I even got a ride around the track. Thank you and I'll see you on the flip side.
We had a very quiet and safe stay. Watched it snow too! With the drop in temps and snow we were unable to meet our host and missed opening night of the races. Plan to come back for both!
A short overnight stay. Our second time there. Great access from I 81. Quite and peaceful place to sleep. Thank you for allowing our stop.
My stay was accepted on short notice and I was the only one at the entire track in November. Fred came by to check in after my first night and made me feel welcome. Very convenient spot off the highway.
Fred's track is a throw back for me i thoroughly enjoyed. Grew up near 2 dirt tracks. I could just about see, hear and smell it all!
Arrived during twilight and easily found our site. Frrd and Perry's directions are spot on to a level area. At 2500' the temp dropped quickly when the 20-30 mph winds arrived. Honestly, i love this January weather! It brought a nice sunrise too.
We spent a nice quiet night at the racetrack. Easy in and out. Fred came by to make sure we were comfortable. Very good host. We want to come back to see the races.
Enroute to Florida from Ohio. Arrived late before rain hit. Very nice high up dry area to spend a very quiet night. Would have liked to walk the area but rain and fog prevailed so we continued our journey south the next morning. Would like to return for a race event someday Thank you for a nice place to pull off the highway and rest.
Right off highway. WIDE open space for newbies like me to easily park RV. Very cool to walk the racetrack while not in operation. My dog enjoyed sniffing the grounds, too! Thank you!
A very convenient location. Easy in and out. We did not meet our host but want to send thanks for a very enjoyable stay.
Location is convenient for those traveling through, nearby hardware store and grocery options. Large and level grassy site with good mountain views.
Highway 81 is nearby and the noise is there, it gets less noisy at night and we had a good sleep.
Driving in/ out was easy following the signs, but be aware of the gravel at the split where you see “pit entrance” sign, the pavement turns into gravel and cause spinning on wheels, so put on 4x4 before the split.
Thank you Peery for having us stay!
We had a very enjoyable stay! We were able to visit with the host shortly after arrival. Very peaceful night and will definitely recommend!
We stayed here for one night while traveling from Pittsburgh to Georgia. We had read reviews about Fred maybe coming out and greeting us and taking us down on the track… It’s all true! The place has a pretty cool history and Fred is clearly proud of it and it shows. We had tons of room with plenty of spaces to choose from that were nice and flat. It was crazy windy, but we felt very safe. Would stay here again!
I stayed just outside the track area with a beautiful view of the valley. The owner was very pleasant and checked to make sure i had everything I needed before leaving. All in all - a great experience....
Stayed at fred's 2 nights. Had ti cut our visit short. fred met up with us.... told us if the track history and took us for a spin around there track. we were disappointed we couldn't stay for Saturday night racing
Fred was a gracious host. We enjoyed watching the races as we arrived on race night, and Ace, our Lab, was able to run around and explore the open spaces. My granddaughter had never been to a stock car race and it has been several decades since I have been to one. My former husband was a race car junky when he was young, but gave it all up for family. It was fun reminiscing. We would love to stop again when in the area.
Love the serenity and on a clear night, the sky here is incredible.
Very quiet place, and we were welcomed on arrival. Walked a couple laps on the track, and had a quiet evening.
We really enjoyed our stay here. This area is beautiful. Our host had maps of scenic routes for us to look at. Friendly people, great spot. Very quiet and dark at night
A gracious host and a wonderful, quiet night under the stars. The large parking area available made us feel alone even though we were not the only boondockers there. Would definitely stay again when in the area. Thanks for your continuing support to the RV community.
super quiet overnight stay. The big flat grassy parking area is on a little rise above the racetrack. Nice view of the mountains! Fred came by when I arrived and again when I was leaving to make sure I was OK and had everything I needed. Super nice and very accommodating host! Great overnight stop near I-81.
Not only did we get to stay on the property, which super convenient to the highway, it turned out the Labor Day race was that night, so we got to see the races.
I can't begin to describe how neat this place is the owner came to greet us as he did prior we had nice conversation learned a lot about him. he sure is interesting the docking area is clean & quiet it's the perfect place to boondock.
Thanks for an amazing experience
We talked to our host for at least an hour. He has lead a very interesting life and we found there were many things we had in common. The spot in which we camped was level and just outside that dirt track of the raceway. It was next to the expressway, but noise wasn't a problem for us. Beautiful area in the mountains. If we travel through the area again, we would love to visit again.
When we first got there we thought we just were going to bed. But the owner of the race track pulled up to our camper and told to wait for a couple minutes and he would come back. When he returned he was in an old car and gave us a tour of the whole track and how it was built. He even let my son drive in the track. If you ever come down to Virginia you should definitely stay here .
We spent our first boondocker experience at a race track in the beautiful hills of Virginia with Fred. His track is very nice and a fast high banked 1/2 mile.
He was there to greet us and gave hubby a ride around the track.
He place we parked was just beautiful. We slept soundly and will be back for a big race for sure.
Thanks FB for fabulous experience!!
Only stayed one night but look forward to coming back to the area to stay a little longer and take in a race night. Easy access off of Interstate 81. We did not get to meet the host but communication was always prompt and clear.
Fred is a great host. Stopped by to welcome us and showed us several good spots we could chose from to set up. Easy on and off interstate but far enough to be very quiet at night. Saw a few deer on edge of parking lot.
staying with this host was amazing, lol at least for my rig mate who loves racing. Fred even took us for a ride around the track. Fred is a hard work man that's for sure with an amazing sweet wife. Truly hope to see them again in our travels. Take care Fred with much love from Mary Mealer and Brian Carder.
This was a great stop. Very relaxing environment Fred was a super host. I had a great chat with him and found his travel experiences very interesting. I hope we get the chance to travel through the area again and get to stop and see him.
Awesome overnight spot. Very peaceful spot overlooking the track. My only recommendation when leaving the parking area, take the road you came up on, not the road to the left (south). I'm 12ft and just missed the wire and it's a rougher route. My mistake completely. So when headed up follow the owners directions and when you merge to the right, take the left road. Take that same road down 😁 Thanks again! We will stay again.
Very close to freeway. Quiet & plenty of flat area to park. Didn't even have to do any leveling. Our very first boondicking experience. Thank you Fred!
Last night we stayed at Wythe Race Way in Rural Retreat Virginia. It was a wonderful place to stay. Right next to the dirt track with a beautiful view of the mountains. Our host was a very friendly and interesting man. He showed us around the grounds and made us feel very much at home. would gladly stay there again.
We found our way to the track parking lot on our own as Fred was not there and he did not answer his phone. If he had added to his welcome message to follow the sign to the Pit Parking it would have helped us get situated. There is plenty of room and much of it is level. Clearly one would not want to be there for boondocking on a race day. As it is the track is otherwise closed during the time of covid 19.
We were very grateful to have a lovely quiet night by ourselves boondocking. We certainly would stay again if we needed a place in the area.
