Description

Rural but city close mountaintop getaway near San Diego, with valley and mountain views all the way to the Mexico border. Level parking spot with amazing view. Two hosts, one a retired, well traveled boondocker!

House Rules

No fires.
No barbeques.
No generators after 10 pm.
Free use of deck with chairs to enjoy the mountain views. Access on East side of house.

Access Road Conditions

Gated property at the top of a very steep paved road, greater than 12% incline, with a big dip off highway. Need to coordinate arrival for access, gate does not have a code. Best to arrive first time in daylight, avoiding rush hours. Low clearance rigs should turn off highway at an angle to minimize drag or use unpaved access road (which has limited turning radius). Rigs greater than 25 feet or with long overhang will likely drag at dip and may not make the tight turn from access road. Property is terraced and hosts will assist with turning rigs around for exit. Though we have plenty of space, we can only accommodate smaller rigs due to access and turnaround conditions. No trailers, we do not have sufficient turnaround space. Exceptions for trailers may be made for experienced drivers.

Our Second Stay

We really enjoyed our time at Hi Hopes and decided to come back to stay again. We enjoy the host’s company as well as the community pool, library and shopping in nearby Poway.

Our enjoyable stay at Hi Hopes!

We really enjoyed our stay at Hi Hopes. We were warmly greeted by the property owner (btw... all the other reviews of him are true!) He is a friendly and gracious host, and an incredible and inspirational human to boot!! We thoroughly enjoyed the tour of his property and our many conversations with him. Thank you so much!
The views are incredible and the boondocking driveway is smooth and level. This location is close to downtown Lakeside and there is major shopping options in nearby Poway. We will definitely come here again soon!

Top of hill

Lakeside is in the extreme east of San Diego, great to be away from city.

Road up the hill may look challenging but our class B handled it without problems.

Host was a very gracious gentleman. Would go back just to visit with him.

Beautiful spot

Beautiful spot on the side of the hill. View is fantastic. Main host was out of town for work so we dealt with her backup, who was an absolutely delightful guy. Very pleasant stay.

Beautiful moutanside view

The property owner was friendly and a gracious host. The road up to the property is a bit precarious, especially for larger rigs, but if you can make it up, it’s definitely worth the effort.

Wonderful experience

This was very a cool experience. The property is pretty amazing and off the beaten path. The owner built everything and his story is truly inspirational. Should I pass back through this area, I won’t hesitate to stay here again.

Thank you for your ultra-responsiveness and amazing hospitality!

PERFECTLY SPLENDID

Rachelle and Bert were such great hosts! Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to meet Rachelle due to her being out on an adventure but I did meet Bert and what a gem he was! He is just the sweetest and had such wonderful tales of his journeys throughout his years. When you visit, it’s a must that you sit and have some coffee or tea with Bert and gab! Bert and I are now pals and I can’t wait till the next time I can come visit him. Thanks for everything!

Incredible spot and nice people

Getting up that monster hill is well worth it. I was able to have a chat with the homeowner and got an incredible tour! Very much appreciate it.

Secure, clean, and friendly!

The owner welcomed me when I arrived at this beautifully landscaped spot. Communication was easy. I parked behind an automatic gate and the owner gave me a key so I could come and go as I needed. Communication was easy. Very gracious and friendly! Thank you so much!

Outstanding Hosts

My first stay with a BW host. It couldn’t have been any better. Rachel’s driving instructions were spot on and was a terrific guide. Bert was the most genuine person, a true Renaissance man. The property was divine. We were encouraged to pick fruits from the trees. Upon seeing the drive way, was a little concerned but there was no need. Although steep, it was concrete all the way and had no problems. Can’t wait to return, if only to spend evenings sharing stories with Bert. He’s truly someone special and so is the property.

Amazing home and amazing people

This is an amazing place to stay in the San Diego area. Our previous plans for camping feel through due to Covid, but these hosts took us in on sorry notice. The house and views are breathtaking. We spent a few hours chatting with the hosts and learning about their great adventures. We wish we could've stayed longer but our trip plans required us to venture North. We hope to come back sometime in the future. The access and drive up to the home is steep. We made it fine using the gravel frontage road and then turning into the driveway. We have a 24.5 ft Forest River Forester. The driveway is narrow in places but not bad and it is paved the whole way. At the top is a flat driveway to park on. If you have a RV our size or smaller you should be fine as long as you are comfortable driving and backing up in narrow spaces. The effort is worth the reward of one of the best places we have ever boondocked.

Simply Incredible

I arrived as scheduled during the non-peak traffic rush hour (good idea), parked on the dirt "frontage road" as recommended & disconnected my Toad as advised (both good ideas). I drove my car up to the "Hi Hopes" home & parked in front of the beautiful home amongst the palm trees aligning the driveway.
I met the owner & builder of "Hi Hopes who is a very interesting "Senior Citizen". We enjoyed several sessions of visiting inside his incredible home. He has obviously enjoyed a wonderful life, especially w his equally hard working & very daring wife.
After the 1st meeting w the Host, I decided to leave my toad at his home & walk down the long concrete road that is shared w a few neighbors. That is when I became very concerned about my 20 yr old Cl. A RV w a new V10 gas engine being able to make it up this hill & possibly having to back down the long road.
There is not much space at the toop nor turnoffs to reverse directions. Also, the road is long for the sharp incline, much more than 10° & w my "senior" years I have become "scared" of heights. There was a visitors large Cl. C parked at the top in the Hosts driveway, She must be much braver than I.
After walking down ~1/3 of the road, I decided to allow my "gut feelings" to over-rule my "brave instinct" to attempt it. So, I walked back up to the Host's home & sadly informed him that I was not brave enough to attempt it. I was very disappointed for myself & for this wonderful Host. I seldom cancel my approved visits, especially upon my arrival.
But, w my Hosts suggestion, I did camp over-night where I had parked on the dirt frontage road, mostly used by neighborhood 4 wheelers. I did hope that none of them would be using it that evening.
It was still early (~4PM) on my arrival day so w the Hosts knowledge, I decided to accomplish my 2 primary goals for visiting the San Diego area.
A. Visit what some motorcyclists consider the furthest SW location of the "4 Points of America". San Ysidro, California on the border of Mexico.
B. Per my BW Hosts recommendation, visit Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial which is on the highest local mountain NW of San Diego. The Memorial is terrific but the view is truly amazing.
Would I go to "Hi Hopes"again? Never to camp in a large RV. But definitely to visit this wonderful man & BW Host. He, his home & view are all amazing.
My sincerest THANK YOU! to BranchingOut, including to the young Lady that advised me on how to get there & much more.

Wow wow wow what a great visit!

We had an amazing visit with Hi Hopes.
Two great hosts with great life stories. Wonderful conversations, warm and inviting.
Beautiful hi mountain side perch. Perfectly level parking spot. great view looking down towards San Diego.
I could go on we were both so sad to leave.
Follow their instructions about accessing off the busy road. And when they say steep driveway they mean it.
