I'm located on the high desert south of Belen, New Mexico surrounded by beautiful mountains and overlooking sevilleta national wildlife refuge. My lifestyle is off grid and rustic.
I love to sit around the fire over coffee or a beer and talk about life experience but politics and religion are off-limits always.
There are no fences but if your dogs are well-behaved they're free to roam around the area but beware there is cactus.
Horses are welcome but I have no corall or facilities. They can be unloaded, walked, ridden and harnessed.
Smoking is okay as long as you don't leave your butts on the ground.
Children of any age are fine. I have a few grandchildren I love dearly.
Quiet Generators won't bother me though I see no need for them after 10 pm
I'm retired, laid back and easy going so just use common courtesy and we will get along fine.
I'm one and a half miles off the paved highway on an unmarked dirt road atop a hill with beautiful views to the south west and east. It's open range so look out for cows and horses. The road has a few washboard spots so go slow. The turn to come up the driveway is tight but not impossible. The hill is not steep. There's plenty of room to turn a big rig around in the designated parking area. The nearest tree is miles away. There are no lights so if you arrive after dark call me and I will meet you at the turn off from the highway.
Next to the rig. There is a large parking area beside and behind the house.
It's possible that I may go to Arizona for Thanksgiving and New year's.
I love to visit the Sevilleta national wildlife refuge. The Bernardo wildlife area and Ladd S. Gordon Waterfowl complex are nearby for bird watching as is beautiful San Lorenzo canyon. Downtown Albuquerque is an hour away and the VLA very large array is an hour and a half. Take a day trip to the three Salinas Pueblo missions. You won't be disappointed. There's an RV park with hookups and a dump site six miles away and Walmarts about 25 miles north and south as well as a couple of truck stops along the interstate. Belen has a historic Harvey house museum. I ride a small dual sport motorcycle and there are lots of dirt roads to play on in the area.
We can't begin to describe how grateful we are for highdesertfreedom and his hospitality. We were on our way south to a few national parks when the shutdown happened. Our other option we thought we had secured fell through just as we were packing to leave. Highdesertfreedom told us to stay as long as we needed. As things progressed and places shut down, we knew we needed to stay. He welcomed us with open arms and provided a beautiful and safe place for us to shelter in place for 3 months. He shared amazing food with us and we helped him out in any way we could with projects other other stuff. We will forever be grateful for the kindness of highdesertfreedom and we consider him "framily"! We will miss him and all the amazing desert life that we got to experience. We could not have made it through that time without him!
hot and windy but the views are 360 and the company GREAT! Many good conversations, a little slot canyon exploration, some birding, a good dinner. Too short a stay. I hope to come back someday just for the interesting chats. and good karma! Thanks to all BW hosts!
The host was very friendly and welcoming. The location is absolutely gorgeous! Our kids found so many cool rocks and fossilized wood. We have never seen so many stars in the sky- so beautiful. We highly recommend this location.
Prompt, accurate and polite communications, and overall a very good stay. I’d certainly stay again if in the area. It was fun to hear about Larry’s home and lifestyle.
Larry was a very gracious host. We didn't get to see him much because it was very windy when we were there. The location had beautiful views and had a peaceful feeling in spite of all the Corona craziness. Thank you for the safe haven Larry!
Everything worked out great. It was a safe place for us to stay the night and the host was very nice and friendly but gave us the space we needed. Thank you for the hospitality. 😊
We enjoyed our quick stay at the High Desert home. With the Corona virus concern, we had a short but pleasant conversation with our host & another BW guest at a distance. Would stay again.
HighDesertFreedom was an amazing host and his property is beautifully located off the beaten path. We watched beautiful sunsets and stunning full moon rising. He was a great host and a kind, friendly individual. We wish him the best and were sad we didn't get to see him when we left but hope to stay with him if we ever roll through New Mexico again! Best of luck in your future endeavors!
My intentions was to visit this location for just a few days,
but the host Larry is a terrific host/tour guide &
but wo being asked, he invited me to stay longer.
When you are enjoying the location & your company,
sometimes it becomes difficult to leave.
Thank you Larry, you are great guy!
Our stay with HighDesertFreedom was amazing. Not only did we meet a terrific guy but also made a new friend. We really enjoyed spending time with this super friendly host who was great company and a good conversationalist. He was so good with our two dogs that they were able to run free and play outside too. We shared beautiful, panoramic sunsets surrounded by mountains, and one night was particularly vivid and colorful. Our host also told us about a couple of very neat places nearby that we were able to explore. It is our hope to be able to meet up with this super cool person again the the future.
Larry is wonderful! We met other BDW folks here and there was lots to do. Larry had us over for a fire and chatting and we all had a great time. Looking forward to visiting again.
High Desert Freedom was an amazing host, great conversationalist and all around cool dude. He made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived and was happy to have us join him around the fire or in his yard each night. Our 3 1/2 year old son loved him and was more than comfortable having a chat with him. High Desert Freedom provided great information about sites to visit in the area and as we traveled further west.
I would best describe the location as a peaceful and beautiful slice of desert. During our stay we saw great sunrises, starlit and moonlit nights and amazing sunsets. The sunrise and sunset are framed by wonderful mountains, all of which are easily visible from High Desert Freedom's land. My sun and I took a walk one morning through the desert and came across and group of roaming horses and saw a sprinting desert hare.
We would definitely stay there again and hope to cross paths with High Desert Freedom again someday. Thanks so much High Desert Freedom for you hospitality.
I arrived to a double rainbow arcing over the desert, and watched a long slow sunset decorating the mountains and clouds in its brilliant colors. Fireside dinner and interesting conversation with a man who has been transforming his world into something of simplicity and sustainability. If you stop by, I think you'll be charmed as a well!!
