There are parking lot lights, a garbage can, and a port-a-potty. There is a firepit with a short climb up the hill. There is a wooded area to walk pets. We do require that pets be on a leash, as we have two cats. And of course, a funky ice cream shop with premium ice cream, a sculpture park in the woods, and lots of places to sit in the shade! We request a maximum of 3 days. It is suggested to call ahead because sometimes the parking lot can be full of customers. But after 9:30 pm or so, all you'll hear is road traffic. From October thru March, the shop is closed, so you can come anytime. Just please be considerate, and leave it like you found it!
You can run your generator.
No unleashed dogs.
Must arrive outside business hours (12-9 Wed. thru Sat., 2-9 Sun) on weekends (no restriction October-March).
Please leave it as you found it!
Busy road (rt. 89), then down a small hill to lower parking lot of Scoops Ice Cream & Such ice cream shop. Shop is open 12-9 pm Wed. thru Sat. and 2-9 on Sunday. It is a busy ice cream shop; on weekends you would have to get there outside those times.
October-March you can come in at any time.
Can park along back hill ridge in lower parking lot close to carport. Back in also available.
Don't plan to arrive between 12-9:30 pm on weekends between April and September, as the parking lot may be full of cars. You do not have to worry about meeting with us if we have already accepted your reservation by phone or text.
Mount Airy is Andy Griffith's hometown, so Mayberry is just minutes away! Also we love Pilot Mountain State Park. Round Peak Winery is just around the corner.
We had a great stay at Scoops Ice Cream, everybody was very friendly and helpful. We were only there for one night and the weather prevented us from exploring everything. We did enjoy some great ice cream but will have to come back to check out all the great sculptures and trails. My wife and I had a great time exploring Mount Airy's downtown. We missed out on the Porkchop Sandwich at Snappy's, will be planning to return soon to Scoops and Mt Airy.
We have been having a great time at Scoop's in Mt. Airy, home of Andy Griffith and Mayberry. Lots of things to see and do here. Chazz & Viv are great hosts. They are so generous and fun to hang out with. The ice dream us delicious!! We will stop here again in the future.
This is a “great stop” in more ways than one!! The host was super friendly and accommodating, the ice cream was delicious and plentiful and the creative garden is definitely worth a walk through!! Highly recommend staying here!!
The hosts were a joy to visit with. They have a great set up with water and electricity. The spot was mostly level. It was quiet and safe.
The hosts made sure we had all we needed and provided local insight into things to do in the area.
We absolutely recommend this place.
Oh...the ice cream sundaes were delicious.
We stayed here to avoid a hurricane before heading to the coast...we did not realize how fun Mount Airy and the surrounding area is. You will not regret staying here.
The site was quiet, peaceful, and level. We had good cell data reception (Verizon).
I can't begin to express how great a host Scoops Ice Cream & Such is. Viv+Chazz respond to communications VERY quickly making sure we knew exactly what to expect. Chazz was there every minute from the time we first arrived until we were parked and plugged into their power. He ensured we had enough water onboard offering to hook us up to his residence (declined as we had plenty). He was there in the morning to ensure I was able to safely exit onto the road.
The only thing that did not exceed my expectations was the ice cream - totally my fault. We arrived right at closing time, Viv said she would reopen the shop for us however we did not take her up on the most generous offer. You can be sure I will have the ice cream on my next visit!
Our heartfelt thanks to Viv+Chazz. We WILL be back
Viv+Chazz hosted our first Boondockers Welcome experience. It was also our first night ever in an RV besides the two nights in our home location without any water, hookups, or generator (immediately after purchasing the trailer). We made our Boondockers Welcome request on that second night in the RV. It was quite late. I didn’t know a photo of the rig was needed so had to run out in pitch black night to take an impromptu pic of the trailer (pic has since been replaced). We were so happy to get a near immediate acceptance response after placing the request. We exchanged a few messages with Viv+Chazz, all of which eased the stress we had after months of planning and anticipation. We got a reasonably early start on a short 300 mile first trip. It was such a relief to be greeted by Viv+Chazz as we arrived at their location, made so easy by the superb directions and image they had provided. Viv+Chazz guided us into their parking area, helped get electric and water connected (which Viv+Chazz so graciously provided) and asked if there was anything at all that they could help with. Their cordial assistance was such a relief at a time when we very much needed it. There is a wonderful short trail area with Viv+Chazz metal sculpture work and of course the amazing Ice Cream shop that they operate. It is such a quaint, friendly business, clearly catering to, and loved by, the community and passersby. The entrance slopes down to their parking so getting up onto the busy highway on departure appears challenging but Viv+Chazz was present the next morning to provide traffic control, allowing us to safely exit the parking area and get up onto the elevated busy highway. What a consummate host couple Viv+Chazz proved to be. We have the greatest appreciation and admiration for what they did for us. It truly helped ease much of our anxiety and helped us acclimate to the lifestyle. They told us that the wonderful hospitality they had received from Boondockers Welcome hosts was a big part of why they decided to offer their own hospitality as hosts. We could not be more appreciative. Our heartfelt thanks to these kind, generous hosts.
Did not get to meet them, but great communication made us feel welcomed. Clean and nice place. Would love to be back
A lovely and interesting place this is !
What more can you ask for? I loved hanging out at the ice cream shop while I was parked in the lower lot. The locals are very friendly and will just strike up a conversation. The hosts are fantastic. Very accommodating and when they are not busy can tell you all about the area. I stayed here so I could be close to Mount Airy for Mayberry Days. I would definitely stay here again.
I arrived late in the evening and stayed at the back parking lot which was large and empty. There was a little bit of road noise but the stay was safe and quiet. We sampled the ice cream at Scoops which was truly delicious! Scoops ice cream was quite the venue, its rustic with seating and hanging lights, it was like a hippy hangout, very cool and laid back.
The next day we had breakfast at the Copper Pot restaurant which was a short drive away. Downtown Mt. Airy was a short distance away. We had a delightful day there looking at the stores, and going on the patrol car tour. This was a great place to Boondock if visiting Mt. Airy or if you are stopping over on your way to another destination.
