WE ARE QUARANTINE FRIENDLY!!!
As minister of a church we have a large gravel parking lot where guests can stay a night or two, except for Sunday mornings but then the vehicle/camper could be moved to the east lot which is next to our large garden and hobby greenhouses. Plenty of space to be had and if needed/desired restrooms of the church can be utilized. There are no camping places nearby and this location may be helpful to those who otherwise may be 'stuck for the night.'
Should you want to use the 'dump station' you need to do a bit of extra work though it's not a difficult task.
As indicated we do not request a donation; however, if you do stay for more than 1 night it would be much appreciated if you give a small donation to the church for the hook ups we provide.
Be considerate of others. And if camping over the weekend then must have camp set up on north side of parking lot.
black top road right of the main highwayt
We have a large parking lot in front of the church and the tow vehicle will fit without a problem
We may be gone camping during some week nights during summer months but contact us when you know you'd like to stay and we should be able to help you from afar.
Our location is on the Navajo Nation (reservation) yet are a border town on its east side. On Saturdays we have a Navajo flea market across the street. Much natural beauty and plenty of national parks are nearby. Within a day's travel we have more than 20 national parks/monuments. Can leave camper at our site if towing a vehicle.
We really enjoyed staying at an oasis in the desert! John was a wonderful host! He was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area and our future trip to the Grand Canyon, even let us keep the camper at his place for the day while we drove up to Mesa Verde National Park. He has beautiful gardens and chickens , he even gave us fresh eggs from his chickens. A very person of interest, made our stay very enjoyable! Would highly recommend staying there.
The host was very nice and helpful. Helped with water fill up and showed us where to park for the night. Extremely thankful for this place in Shiprock.
Host was very nice . We stayed 2 nights. There is a camera outside the church which is a smart idea. The campers prior to us left their trash in the front door and it was open . My husband closed the bag but as there wasn’t anywhere to put it he left it there. The parking lot i gravel lot on a very busy intersection. Traffic never stops but does slow down after 8pm
Good place for an overnight
Super friendly host. Calm area, off the beaten path but still close drive to so much. We even got to chat and make friends wi th folks from 2nd rig on site. Thankful for the hospital and good rest for a couple nights!
Our host was very accommodating and flexible in sought of his very busy schedule.
We visited Mesa Verde one day and Shiprock was impressive. Loved the area and shall return in the future.
John is a really great person, he is doing amazing things for his community. He offered us power, water and the church restrooms. Definitely recommend this place!!!
Nice place for a layover. One could probably help with chores if you had the spare time. We had a full agenda. We enjoyed our stay.
This location was a good stopping place and the host, Preacher John, does his best to meet your needs. Leaving our camper, we traveled to and from the grand canyon one day, another day we traveled to and from mesa verde, another we traveled to and from the Aztec National Monument and Ruins near Farmington (allow enough time in your day to go to Chaco Canyon also). We attended Bethel Reformed Christian Church - a wonderful service!
Easy access, wonderful host was offered electric but didn't need. It's on a busy intersection but was quite enough in the evening for us to sleep. Drove out to see Shiprock which is really cool. Would love to have stayed longer and will include it on our next way back through the area.
We had a delightful stay with Pastor John for three nights. The word I have been using to describe him is ebullient. He radiates the joy of his life to all comers. He showed us where to park in front of the church and pointed out the 15 amp outlet we could use. Although he did not ask for any money we made a contribution to the church and bought eggs from his wife. It happened that there was a food distribution program scheduled for the 2nd day of our stay. We helped unload the truck and then were able to participate in handing out the provisions to over 100 family units. The entire process was joyous with many locals doing the work and so many families receiving basic supplies. The opportunity to meet John and work alongside him was far more than we expect from our BDW stays, but we have learned not to have expectations.
Thanks so much to our host - sharing his knowledge of the area made a difference for our visit to the area.
Parked in front of the church. Was able to connect to 15 amp service which kept the refrigerator running and the lights on. Was also able to connect to WIFI which was a great benefit. Quiet than expected considering the busy road. Pastor John was a helpful, friendly and engaging host. We will definitely stay here again if in the area. Thank you.
He was very welcoming and friendly. Had us park where it would be the quietest. Had a good night's sleep.
Very nice and convenient stop along your travels. Two very sweet and kind people were our hosts and they couldn’t have been more gracious and welcoming. Would love to meet them again. Don’t forget to get your farm fresh eggs when you stop here.
John went the extra mile to make us feel at home and make sure all of our needs were taken care of. Highly recommend!
Thank you Pastor John! I was his third visitor for the night and tried to get me situated and ready to relax after a long drive in the desert Navajo Nation!
Level, hard-packed lot. Traffic dies down early evening and them pretty quite. Host friendly and welcomng. Would stay again if passing through.
We arranged to be there on the 17th for one night but later needed to be in the area on the 16th and was told no problem. The host was very helpful, loaned us a map and gave us ideas for things to do in the area. He also let us store our ebikes inside while we were there.
This was a great place for an over night stop right on the route we were taking.
Host was very helpful with 110 electric (no 30 amp) & water. Great place for exploring Mesa Verde & Four Corners when it's open again.
Our host was extremely friendly and helpful. He visited with us upon our arrival and helped us get parked and hooked up to the electricity. Having lived there for 25+ years he provided us with so much information. Where to go, what to see, how far everything was, it was amazing. We were only able to stay for one night but if we come back in the future we will be sure to stay here again.
Thank you so much Oasis and church for giving us a nice stay. Everyone was so very friendly. Very close to amenities as it is right in town off the highway. This place works for a great overnight. Might work better for some folks during the week as the church members were very active during the weekend. Thank you again and nice to meet you.
A check engine light came on in my truck south of Grants, NM. We got nowhere in Gallup, NM trying to address the problem. Everyone was booked up for a week. Since my truck was running just fine, we decided to head north on US 491 to Shiprock as we were planning on visiting SE Utah. I contacted the host on BW, and he called us enroute just two hours later.
My plan was to drive into Farmington, NM the next morning and find an independent mechanic to clear the code. We found one at TC Automotive, and he cleared the code. The problem was likely triggered by frozen DEF in our diesel truck the previous two nights with temps down to 10 degrees F.
The hospitality offered by An Oasis in the Desert was nothing short of remarkable. As we pulled in, he presented options as to where we could park. Since the church was on lockdown due to COVID, he offered us the use of the church restrooms. If our truck was going to have to be in the shop for a while, he even offered us the use of the church's van. Fortunately, we did not have to take him up on his generous offer.
The host's location is close to a couple of major highways. Since we have overnighted at roadside rests with the sounds of rumbling diesel engines through the night, the highway sounds here were more like white noise. Once in a while the hum would be accented by a semi's Jake brake.
To conclude, I highly recommend An Oasis in the Desert.
We pulled in way later than we had expected so we didn’t get to meet anybody until the next day. The area is flat and easily accessible. The only thing I hadn’t understood before hand is that it is a bit of a sketchy area. We had kids scooters and kids bikes I. The front of our rv and our host told us in the morning we could put our stuff in the church so it wouldn’t walk away. Luckily everything stayed put and we didn’t have any problems. We were grateful for the place to sleep. Our host was very nice and gave us ideas of things to do or see in the area.
This was a great place to stay. Level & large parking lot so plenty of room & access to electricity. John greeted us from a distance respecting our wishes for Covid safety. Would stay again if in the area.
Our host was great. He not only welcomed us but checked on us occasionally to make sure we had everything we needed. We were even able to buy some of his wife's wonderful eggs. We did have the unfortunate incident of having one of our bikes stolen from our truck bike rack and our host allowed us to put our other bike inside the church building for safety. BTW, the Shiprock police department is very nice as well! :)
John is a charming host and a great communicator. He accepted our request at short notice and made us feel right at home.
We really enjoyed our stay here. There was some highway noise, but not bad. The best part of our stay, the church had a Sing-spiration service we got to listen to. Such a blessing.
Last minute on our part. Didn’t connect but he got in touch next morning to say he was sorry. Great guy, did not have to do that, but he did!!!
Great stay with our new Dutch friend. Shared stories and enjoyed talking our native language in Indian county. Hope we will meet again. Super host.
Oh my goodness....This host and the church property were such a blessing for us last night. We were zooming south to get ahead of a big cold front, so having this place to stay in Shiprock saved us...giving us a night of rest before another 5 hours to warmer Sedona. This host was the friendliest and most hospitable host...offering anything he could offer from power, to bathrooms, to just uplifting conversation. What an inspiration he and his wife are to us, living in Shiprock for nearly 25 years to obediently share his faith with the Navajo community. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you!
We had a nice visit with the host. He was super friendly and helpful, and helped us plan our trip for the following day. He took the time to show us around his greenhouses—a favorite hobby of ours. We would definitely recommend a stay at Oasis in the Desert!
We were lucky enough to stay for a short 1 night stay here in Shiprock, NM. Father John is a very gracious host who we enjoyed talking to. We hit the road the next morning on our trip, but only after checking out the grocery store and getting gas. This site has all you need to rest and refill. Don't miss this little Oasis.
Pastor John is a friendly and gracious host. We parked in the level gravel lot in front of the church and plugged into an electrical outlet on the church. We were able to run low level electrical things, but our trailer’s power management system tripped when we tried the microwave at 14 amps (might not be an issue for other RVs). There was some traffic noise but it didn’t bother us much.
John is the super host you’ve read about!
Taking time in his busy world to make us welcome and bring us up to speed on his home town Shiprock New Mexico...
Thanks John for your hospitality!
The host is extremely friendly and helpful. He was very concerned that we were comfortable. Easy on/off the highway and nice, flat spots. We had the bonus that he had just harvested some tomatoes and cucumbers and could buy some for the road.
True to its name, this stay was an oasis in the desert! Delightful shady spot with a beautiful garden view. Much gratitude to the host.
Thanks for letting us stay at your church. Sorry we had to leave early and didn't get to visit more.
We were is the middle of know here and really had very few options. Oasis in the Desert is a great place. Traveling east bound, there is not one place to stay for hundreds of miles. The host, made sure that we had everything we needed and was very nice in the process. Lovely garden and birds everywhere!
Thanks for the host and hopefully see you in the future!!
Claude & Sylvia
John was extremely welcoming. He showed us maps of the area, suggested things to do, gave us some history of the area. This stay was great!
We stopped in Durango and didn’t feel safe and secure. So very thankful for the gracious welcome. The kids loved the chickens, cats, bunny, and conversation. We look forward to returning and helping in the garden! Will bring some cash to take a plant on with us. Thank you for everything!
John put me under a big tree so I was in the shade. You would need a small rig to do that otherwise you’re in a parking lot on a busy street but if you need to stop it’s perfect
Truly was a Desert Oasis that was very spiritual led by one of the most warm caring pastors you'll ever meet do they hook up very easy hookup an easy to find try to get to go to his Sunday morning service
John was a wonderful host. He came out within 5 minutes of my arrival, showed me where to park, allowed me access to the church to get some drinking water. Great location - flat, etc... You will get some road noise as you are at the intersection of two roads. Added benefit if you choose to use it, are the picnic tables along the road - each with tree shade. Overall a very nice location and John is a very wonderful soul with years of camping experience and insights on the local area which he will gladly share.
Our stay at oasis in the desert was a good one. Our host (I’ll call him J) came out to meet us shortly after we arrived to offer up the options on where to park. J was very friendly and offered a couple times to show us around his town of Shiprock. The only reason we turned him down is because of the covid requirements for social distancing. We were able to help J out in his plant nursery though by repotting seedlings, which was fun. We also visited two of the local attractions that J suggested. J did everything right to make our stay a positive one. I would be remiss though if I did not mention that, although J was great, the actual area we parked in was not as great. Shiprock seems to be a pretty depressed town and with some of the people we had hanging around our parking area we definitely felt the need to keep everything locked up while we were there. Part of this may have been our own fault as we could have chosen to park on the other side of the church, which J told us would quieter. It also would have cut down on some of the highway noise.
Awesome location so close to many different attractions in the four corners' area! Our host was very kind and welcoming, offering dump, water, and electric for a small donation for the community. He offered many suggestions and we regret that we had to leave to head back home because of the current situation going on in the country. Would have loved to stay longer but we were needing to get back home! Hope to stay again if ever in the area!
JohnGreydanus is a great host and his parking lot is a good place for an overnight stop. There are few Boondocker locations in the Four Corners area so finding this location was a blessing. Plenty of room to navigate without having to unhook.
John and his wife was nice people. Told us about a lot of places to see. Will be stopping there again when in the area.
Despite the location near a highway, it was quiet and safe. The host was welcoming and checked on me at dusk to make sure I was OK. Level, easy parking, plenty of space to maneuver.
This spot was perfect. Its a large parking area of the church right at the intersection of two main roads our hosts was away while we were there but still answered quickly and allowed us to stay anyways.
Even letting us know where to find an outlet. We found the area very peaceful at night despite some of the other comments. Slight noise from the road but most boondockers should be used to that. We slept great!
The spot was perfect for going to 4 corners and/or canyon of the ancients and hovenweep national parks and many other great sites in the area. We were surprised how much there actually was.
We would definitely stay again when coming through NM
John was very welcoming and helpful for our first boondocking stay! We stayed for five nights so we could explore surrounding areas and get some errands completed. is on a busy street but it got quiet after 10 and didn't really even notice. Felt safe there and John was always available when we needed him really great host and great experience! Thanks John
JohnGreydanus is very accommodating and a wonderful host, if you are in the area I highly recommend him to assist you with your boondocking stays. Shiprock is a tiny town near the Four Corners region of New Mexico, there isn’t much out here and if you are stuck in the area, John is the guy I consider staying for a night or two.
The Shiprock terrain formation is an interesting sight to see and Flowing Water Casino isn’t too far from the town and have pretty good food there too!
Host provided detailed directions to location and met us when we arrived at the church. He helped us get situated with with water/electricity and then stayed to visit with us for a while. Site is a level gravel parking lot of the church which is located at the intersection of two highways. There is significant traffic noise because the roads are quite busy. Host invited us to help him the next morning with food distribution at the church, and we were honored to be included in his ministry to the reservation residents.
And we may just come again! Did not get to visit this time but hospitality was felt just the same. We appreciate these folks a lot. We also recommend this spot when traveling through the Four Corners area.
Our host was very friendly and accommodating and responded very quickly to our request. We had a great visit, easy access, level parking plenty of room. Would definitely stay again if in the area.
We would come back here anytime. In fact, we will be back in 10 days on our way home. Nice location. Conversation was pleasant. Congrats Pastor John for 23 years at this church.
Never got a chance to meet my host. Ran late coming in and had to leave early to stay on schedule but a quiet stopover. Thanks again.
Our Host was very accomadating, couldn't do enough for us,even checked our dog's paw when he hurt it.!
He has a lovely garden and we had fresh peaches and tomatoes.
But the street noise was constant and woke us up during the night. It was a bit disconcerting to me.
We were there on a Saturday night, maybe another night is quieter.
While I didn't stay at his place he deserves a positive reference for being responsive to messages.
We had a very good time there and got some good informations for our journey. Thanks again for having us!
Great host. Parked right near a busy highway but the traffic died down about bedtime so it was no problem.
Brief overnight stay. Our host has created amazing gardens in the city.
We were graciously welcomed even though he was in the middle of a busy schedule! Large parking lot. Busy intersection that was much quieter after 11:00pm. Beautiful garden. We would be glad to stay again if in the area. We saw a double rainbow after a rainstorm. Stunning!
I'm not sure I've ever met any pastor as busy and energetic and jack-of-all trades as John! He worked on the grounds before the sun came up and well after it went down. His backyard is a lush, shady, green oasis with beautiful flowers and covered picnic tables. He and his wife are wonderful hosts - not sure how they do it - the week I visited they were running VBS (Vacation Bible School) and John had driven a van around town to pick up kids - but, sadly, I didn't get a chance to drop in to watch their daily program. When I was leaving he was busy selling garden plants and I waited in line to say goodbye. And he still managed to make time to help me solve an issue with my awning and check on me a number of times.
Perfect location - not too noisy, only the occasional air brakes from trucks making the turn out on the highway. There's plenty of room to park at this church - wide open gravel lot, but no shade trees overhead. If you need eggs, buy them here! If you're on your way home, buy your garden plants here.
Really enjoyed meeting John and it was nice to have a quite place for the night. We parked right in front of his church. Just wish we could have stayed longer and had some of his fresh eggs. Sharon
Great location to visit surrounding attractions. Nice host.
Thanks John & Marcie for being such great hosts. We would definitely stay there again if we visited the area another time.
Parking area is in church parking lot. There's a lot of road noise till about 10:30p.m., then wasn't too bad except for the occasional air brakes from semi's.
We had a great time talking with John and my wife & John talked gardening for about an hour. John's wife has chickens, and if your lucky she won't be sold out. We had her fresh eggs for dinner & again for breakfast.
Would definitely stay here agt if in the neighborhood!
John was so very kind and welcoming. He had just had a molar pulled but came over anyway to greet us and make sure we were settled ok.
This was exactly the stop we needed. John was a pleasure to meet and helpful in so many ways and his wife sells fresh eggs that we can highly recommend as well. Thank you for having us John.
